MRI scan - ear plugs?

My DD is due to have an MRI scan shortly. They have told me that they don't use any sedation, but that it is up to me if I want to give her something myself, such as Phenergan.

I was thinking that ear plugs may block out some of the noise - she has ASD, and is very sensitive to sound.

Can anyone recommend where I can get some?

I have looked online but they all seem to be for children going swimming, rather than for noise
reduction.

I think that ear defenders may be out, because the top of her head needs to be clear.

Any general tips/reassurance about MRI scans very welcome too!

Would these be any good?

Can't help with MRI advice though - DD hasn't had one and because she's only 3 she'll have a GA if she does have one...

Thank you Leonie, that is so kind of you!

I've spoken to the MRI department and explained my concerns and they have told me that they will be able to give my DD earplugs to block out the noise - so feel a little bit happier now.

Hello! I took my eight-year-old son through the MRI experience last summer. It helped that he'd heard the sounds that the machine makes online first, so they weren't a surprise to him, if you Google MRI sound or audio samples you can probably find some samples to play your daughter. He also watched a little film about other children going through the MRI experience. Having an idea of what was going to happen helped, though one of the films we saw made it look like he'd be able to watch a film on a little screen inside the scanner, which didn't actually happen and that made him cross! Does the hospital you're going to have a what-to-expect-on-your-visit section for children on its website? St Mary's Paddington and Evelina Children's Hospital both have short films on their sites about MRI aimed at children which you might find helpful. Best of luck.

Found the link for the St Mary's film for kids having an MRI. It's here: www.imperial.nhs.uk/cyp/seven-to-twelve/index.html

Tutak, thank you, that's very helpful. Will have a look at the video with DD - it will help her (and me!) to know what to expect.
Ill let you know how it goes...

At the hospital where DS has had MRI scans they have special headphones and can play music to the patient - we were able to take one of ds's favourite cds with us (trouble is he started singing along......)
