Pushchair for DD

jenk1 · 03/05/2006 13:32

Am in a quandry about what to do for the best re DD,s pushchair.
Atm i have one from Mothercare that cost about 50quid.

But she,s going to need a pushchair for a while as she has CP and cannot walk very far.

My question is this, when and if would she be eligible for a mclaren major pushchair would i have to wait a while for her to get one if its for a while then im going to have to buy another one as this one isnt very good and it doesnt recline much.

Thanks

jenk1 we got ds his mclaren pushchair 1 year ago we had to wait about 6-8weeks for it, you should be entitled to one now if your dd is getting to big for her pushchair.

we got ours through our local child and family centre, we seen our physio about it as ds has trouble with his walking(toe walker), and till ours was delivered they gave us one on loan.
the only thing with them is you have to buy rain covers and anything else you want for it your self.
the rain cover is around £35 then you need the sunshade as well for the rain cover to fit on so in total it costs around £70Angry
But i have found a place on ebay that sells alternate rain covers for the mclaren and you dont need the sun shade and it costs £35Smile

well actually we got a wheelchair voucher that we spent on an off road SN buggy. But I have since also bought a 2nd hand maclaren from ebay as the off roader was too cumbersome for normal shopping trips

Our ot asked us if we wanted one yesturday for our ds (age3) he has mild cp. We said no as he still fits in pushcair but she said to ring when we need one. Try OT.

We're at exactly the same stage, jenk1. I wasn't sure whether to buy another 'ordinary' pushchair this summer but didn't know that it would last that long before needing something like a Major.

I've spoken to our OT who has referred us to the wheelchair dept (called Enabling Technology for Children here!) and I've just been sent a form to complete re. our transport needs. In the meantime a friend had a spare Major (plus accessories) which I've got here to try - seems so much larger than our usual Maclaren. The Majors don't recline at all though did you realise?

My dilemma is that I want something easy for everyday to go in the car yet we have two dogs & do at lot of walking too so currently have a Maclaren plus an all terrain.

Ah, didnt realise that they didnt recline, they wont be suitable for DD yet then as although she,s just turned 2 shes so tiny and is only as big as a one year old and does like to sleep in the pushchair so i think we will buy her another one and get the mclaren major when she,s older.
Thanks

smurfet, are you saying that argos sell a rain cover that fits the maclaren special needs buggy for only £12.99?

If she's that size jenk I would definitely stick with a pushchair. My DD (7) is about a 3 year old size and still fits in the usual Maclaren & three wheeler. When we tried the Major she seemed to be perched on top of it, it's not so cosy & enclosed plus bigger to push & transport in the car.

Personally I would go for a decent large buggy which will last you as long as possible before the next step to a Major or similar. I'd contemplated the Maclaren XT a few months ago but decided we wouldn't use it for long enough before she grew out of it to justify expense. May change my mind though!

You can get inserts for the major that make it more comfortable and provide support \link{http://www.babysroom.co.uk/acatalog/Special_Needs.html\here}(scroll down) but they add to the expense. Also, I think you probably have to take them off to fold the buggy which would be a pain. I got sent them by accident once when I ordered something else (and had to send them back) so I thought I'd mention them in case they might be useful to somebody.

mine took 6/8 weeeks from recommendation to pickup, our referral was via the OT, we have had the major for 5 years now and it has \never gone wrong all it has ever had is one squirt of wd40 to the wheels, our son has now outgrown it and we were told he had to have a wheelchair which we don't want as our son is severely autistic and the buggy is for safety and containment rather than mobility issues, BUT i have found a few buggys for older children that will last until the child is 14 STONE in weight, it is a 3 wheeler from babyjogger.co.uk, also one from kisense.co.uk hope this hepls some of you with the same problems we have! spread the word as our OT was unaware of this...BTW babyjogger also accept wheelchair vouchers and will be VAT exempt if proven for a special needs child
good luck

superstaruk- having had and ordinary baby jogger from when DS was born, we now have we have a SN baby jogger (bought from kidsense)- the Dreamer Design one was way to big for him, and althoughthe BJ is bigger when folded than the Major quite it's fabulous and will last us for a long time. Can go wherever we want with it, DS feels very safe in it, easy to push, can't recomend it highly enough.
