Should I start this battle?

Just had DS (12) first annual review. He's had a really bad time at school over last few months, but he has been moved back down into the SN group in the last couple of weeks and is doing much better. The bullying has stopped for now

Saw Daphne Keen earlier in the year and she diagnosed ASD. I subsequently sent report to the school and to the Ed Psych. School btw is a language resource provision.

Ed Psych said today that LA will not accept DK's report as it was done on a private basis and because I paid her, she wrote what we wanted her to say

I'm happy with school's provision at the moment, although I have been very dissatisfied in the past.

The statement is to stay as it is, which I am OK about apart from the fact that DK said that DS should been seen first and foremost as a child with ASD. So do I ask for son's ASD to be recognised in the statement, or do I leave it as it is being as at the moment, the provision at school wouldn't change?

I haven't even begun to look into ABA and how that might benefit DS, as all my recent time has been spent battling with the school.

Should I get ASD diagnosis into the statement, or do I leave that battle alone?

If it were me, and I knew that provision was meeting my DS's needs and wasn't going to change regardless of diagnosis, I'd keep quiet, because S&L provision is hard to get and could be removed if the dx was ASD rather than S&L.

If I felt my DS's needs were not going to be met, then I'd be using the DK report to get the placement changed to one that would meet his needs.

Only you know which camp your DS falls in.

Thanks lougle I don't really want to change his placement as the ASD unit in this LA isn't too great.
