First meeting with Children's Services, what to expect?

My DS1 and I have our first meeting with a doctor at Children's Services next week. He has been referred as we think he may have Aspergers, he is 7.

I wonder if there is anything more experienced parents can tell me? What to expect or anything I should ask? I have got some childcare for DS2 so I can take DS1 somewhere quiet afterwards to talk if he wants to.

Thank you, any help appreciated.

Thank you PolterGoose, I will take my notes and also note some examples. I always find it strange talking about him when he's sitting there.

Hello jellyrolly, my DD is younger so not sure if this would be relevant for you, but I found it helpful to take her red book to appointments for the questions about development. Has your DS's school given you any observations\comments - would it be worth taking copies of his school reports if these contain any examples or concerns?

Thank you, the red book probably will be useful.

School are a bit, how can I put it, imprecise. For example, when he is upset he does a really high pitched relentless noise which the headteacher referred to as "that annoying noise he makes" whilst pulling distasteful face and flapping her hands. That said, she has been helpful with the referral and I think has already passed some information on (hopefully not while flapping her hands though).

Anything else? Anything at all is much appreciated, I don't want to let him down so trying to get as much info as possible, thank you.

Hi

I have just this morning had my first appt with the community pead after a referral from the G.P at my request. Ds is 9 and I am fairly certain he has Aspergers. The appt lasted about 40 minutes and we were asked lots of questions about everything, development, what are specific concerns are, behaviours etc he also spoke to Ds which was great and ds was able to put his views forward. The next step for us is a very long 6 month wait for an assessment. He will also be referring us for speech and language assessment and getting a report from the school. We are in Kent and there is apparently a real staffing problem and that is why the wait time for assessment is this long. It's very frustrating.

Hi Purplepippin, that is so frustrating for you. I wish these kind of jobs were funded properly but that is whole another rant. I'm glad it went well for you both today though.

If you don't mind me asking, how did your DS feel about going to the meeting today?
