DS has just started going to meet his mates by himself. He is 13 in July and its only been a few months he has been allowed into the village etc. usually he has his step sister with him but more now he wants to go meet his own mates. They live about 5 minute walk and are aware of his autism but he has learnt strategies to help him cope, always has mobile on him but today we had an incident where he was stopped by a police officer who thought he smelt of cannabis!
DS answered all the officers Qs but came home confused and scared. He wasn't sure who the officer was and didn't understand why he had been stopped. I rang police who rang me back and sent the officer over who explaine that they had been looking for a teen boy who had been spotted delivering drugs in area! Officer has suggested DS carrys a card of some sort to explain the autism but I don't know where to start! Please help

Can the NAS help you with one? I'm sure i've read somewhere they have things - or maybe you could give him one of those friendship bands and write that he has autism, so please explain clearly?

Thanks all. I had looked at those autism cards but they are for adults and I can't see what info is inside. May end up designing something.

I'd design and laminate your own, make several.
It's happened to my lad a couple of times, best to be prepared.

Where do you live bonkers ? Some local autism charities issue their own in conjunction with local emergency services . Ds has one. It means he is on police database and police have had training with the autism charity.

Ds has one like this
Perhaps you could make something similar?

Marking place as DS2 is nearly 11; we are at the stage of being about to prep him for walking to the local shop on his own and he'll be walking to secondary school from September.

Actually, maybe try your local Carers Centre too asi'm sure ours offers a similar service to trouts
