Tonight we happened to see, " you've been Framed" , not something we have watched for ages. Our almost 5 year old asd/PDA , watched it. I thought he'd find it funny and he was laughing at all the silly falls etc but it was as if he was faking laughing and looking at us when laughing. I don't know why he would do this...we were laughing, but if he doesn't like something he insists on turning it over usually.
It's puzzled me, any ideas?

This is how DS1 learnt about humour. He learnt that he should laugh if other people were laughing, but didn't know why they were laughing. He is now 10 and if people are laughing he will still fake laugh because he thinks he should do.
It was sometime after the age of 5, I can't remember when exactly, that he started to laugh spontaneously at slapstick humour. He still doesn't really laugh at 'witty' humour, word play etc, but can analyse it to understand a joke (sometimes).

Ds does this I think they are just emmulating and trying to fit in.

DD2 is not dx anything, but she does this a lot. She gives an exaggerated laugh, leans back like santa rubbing his big belly and then slaps her thigh, all the while looking at me as if to say 'this is meant to be funny...isn't it?' It's quite unnerving, but I've taken it to be when she thinks she should find something funny, but doesn't know why, so she just acts the part, but doesn't know what genuine laughter should look like.

It's very different to her genuine delight at something. Today I let her play AngryBirds for the first time. When the pig got knocked over she was laughing hysterically, but it was for herself, not for an audience.

Thanks everyone, Lougle I feel unnerved by it too, people falling over and being silly is a bit slap stick , which he usually does REALLY find funny, that's what I found odd..it's something he would actually laugh at but was really just acting ( PDA role play perhaps?) he also slaps his thigh and his forehead in exaggerated humour! Angry Birds game also has him hysterics, they sound quite alike our two :)
I guess it's not a bad thing if he's trying to fit in....he is normally very own agenda!

If ds watches you've been framed or that total wipe out or whatever its called he does serious OTT manic laughing it drives me crazy as its so false, its funny but not that funny

He actually does random manic laughing at other times as well if something in his head is funny, or even if something a little funny happens, i rarely see his GENUINE laugh as its always so false

lougle · 23/02/2013 21:53

DD1 is captivated by Total Wipeout, Tekeshi's Castle, Ninja Warrrior....she sits with a look of pure joy on her face - absolutely still and silent, with just a blissful smile.

Hmm, is it that they only really find things funny if its directly , physically , happening to them eg Angry bird game, being tickled, also doing the same trick over and over again my son finds it really funny every time, also staged humour
,he tells us to do something that's funny,we do it, he's hysterical and its not fake!
So could watching others experience things eg in You've Been Framed not have the same effect?

My dd who is also 5 does this. She will laugh when I am laughing even when she has no idea why. She does it with other children too, but she had become very good at the fake laugh, it isnt too OTT.

Weird part... I'm almost convinced (as are my dad, her grandma and 4 of my close friends) that dinky is PDA/ASD, and the senco agrees that she fits the criteria.

Dd3 does the bonkers OTT fake laughing at you've been framed.

She has always laughed at slap stick but the laughing is slightly strange.

She has found a channel showing it before school too. Just what I needGrin
