year 2 son struggling at school according to teachers

My ds 7 has been under speech therapist since 3 as he was late to talk. He now speaks normally with a good vocabulary. however still under ST because teachers think he struggles socially - he seems to have friends / goes to houses and parties and plays well.

He doesn't like boisterous kids and there are quite a few in his year. the teachers say if game in playground changes my ds does not understand and is left on his own. my ds tells me he did not play cos he didn't like the new game.

He has been upset in class when not understanding the instructions. he is scared of doing things wrong. he told me he day dreams and has tried to stop the last 2 weeks and found his work a lot easier. the teachers think he cannot follow multiple instructions but he is okay at home. they say he is struggling academically (at let 1a/b in maths and phonics and comprehension but 2b in reading. the teachers want me to request an assessment and to say i am concernedabout his progress.

I think he has made a lot of progress this year

Also he goes to taekwando and stagecoach and loves these activities.

He goes up to people to make friends but is selective and chooses quieter kids or one to one or small groups.

Does anyone know what could be wrong - i cannot see issues at home. help!!!!!!!

Hi soupy, could your son have hearing problems? Hearing is quite complex and children with mild hearing problems may present like your son and seem ok in some environments and troubled with others. I was really surprised when mine had this diagnosis but in hindsight it all made sense! Good luck

Hi i had his ears checked last summer by an audiologist - they said he was in the normal range but not as good as they could be.

Soup I would allow the school to assess your son. If there is nothing 'wrong' they will not find anything. He could be struggling at school for so many different reasons ie: attention difficulties, memory processing, social skills etc. School can be very stressful for some kids, and very often the problems are not so evident at home or in other situations. You want your son to progress and do well in class, let them do 'their thing' and if he needs any kind of extra help, he may be able to get it. As you say he has no issues out of school, you can say you are concerned at the teachers worries if you get what I mean. Good luck.

Thought i would give update. had an assessment done privately. nothing too serious but dd can struggle with complex multiple instructions and will need to have them broken down more. if relayed in 2-3 at a time no problem. also thinks getting upset due to classroom anxiety due to early speech issues. tests showed average academic performance (lower level) just to take school on now to make sure they do right things and stop looking for things that are not there.
