Can I get nhs help for Irlen Syndrome?

Hi,

This is my first ever post, so a bit nervous, apologies in advance for any 'talk' mistakes.

My DD was diagnosed with severe Irlen syndrome last year, she has now got her Irlen lens glasses, which have made a fantastic difference to her reading and well being.

We have had her tested privately in the Midlands and the cost for the test, lenses and glasses has all added up. My husband was also tested positive for Irlen syndrome, and we are yet to buy his lenses because of the cost. I was wondering if anyone knows if we can get help from the nhs? or has any other useful advice regarding getting help for Irlen.

Hi my dd has Irlens too and I don't think you can get help on the nhs to be honest.

I'm in wrexham and here they do test for Irlens on the Nhs and then they give you a sheet of coloured film but you are then expected to go to an optician that specialises in Irlens and the glasses. Then pay for the test to determine the lens colour and then pay for the glasses and lenses.

It's ridiculous isn't it. My dd was having severe headaches before the glasses and her reading was poor but has come on leaps and bounds with the glasses. They obviously need them but why the nhs don't contribute I don't know.

hi how did you get your dd tested for irlens on nhs my son has been assessed for dyslexia (private, as school said they dont assess in flintshire!) and suspected irlens has been picked up to.

I'm in wrexham next door Grin

It was actually the school that suggested to me that she may have Irlens, her teacher was great and went out of his way to buy coloured plastic wallets for her to read through and coloured paper for her to write on. They referred her to the Maelor hospital eye department via the school nurse and then she had the test there. They supply the coloured overlays free of charge but not the glasses. We had to go to a specialist optician in wrexham.

Hi, I know this is an old thread, but we are in Wrexham and have just had our 9 year old diagnosed (privately) with Irlen Syndrome. Which optician in Wrexham did you go to to get the glasses? His school have given him an overlay to use with his school work, but we are looking into the glasses now. Any help would be a godsend.

Thanks

Hi I know this is an old thread but if anyone can help, I live in Conwy and my DS school have asked me to get his eyes tested and tested for Irlans - any advice as to where to do this and is the colourimetry testing the same as the Irlans diagnostic assessment?

Specsavers do Irlen testing at some branches. Make sure they understand that you only want test for glasses though or they will assess for overlay and charge again for glasses test.
