Sensory seeking. Is there any sensory toys similar to blu tack?

My DD7 has ASD and is a sensory seeker and loves holding and squeezing a piece of blu tack, school are great about this and accept she needs it to concentrate in class.

Today in class she pushed the blu tack up her nose (completely stuck right up the top)...2 hospitals and 5 hrs later the blu tack is out!

Is there anything similar that gives the same feedback as a blu tack? I have bought various sensory toys before and she doesn't seem to play or get anything out of them, so would have to be very similar.

Clay is a no-no as she eats it!! Wink
I have also looked at theraputty...I don't think the school will allow this as it can be messy!!

TIA

I have a sensory seeker too I tried bionic putty with him, it didn't help but neither does blu tack so might help your dd, it's bigger than blu tack but not messy

I haven't found theraputty messy - it doesn't tend to stick to anything and it is used in schools regularly.

Thank you all for your replies.

I haven't tried theraputty but I did read some reviews saying it can be messy. It's definitely something I will try with DD....is it similar to blu tac?

Bionic putty looks fab, just bought some so hope it will arrive soon!

We have a koosh ball since doing PECS but never seemed to play or have anything out of it!! maybe a squashy ball might work...but will need to look for a very soft one that gives similar feedback to blu tack.

I know exactly what tags you mean....might have to buy her a pair of kickers just to get the tag!! Wink

There are diff strengths of Therapy putty, from memory (when u ordered it) . The one DS has (I think medium?) is not as sticky as Blutack and firmer , but would not as easily get rolled into small balls.....

Spyrofan · 06/02/2013 19:22

polter thanks, I will keep that in mind. Don't fancy an explosion after the day we've had!!

mrs thanks. Do you think the softer one would be more like blu tack? Just been looking on amazon at them and seem to have several different strengths.

She is writing a thank you card to the hospital as I type!! She loves raiding my card drawer!! Grin

Hi, glad you've found something that does the trick - might invest in some bionic putty for ds1.

Ds1 uses blu-tack at school, but having just bought ds2 some Large Ultra Pencil Grips to help with his hypermobility, we discovered that ds1 couldn't put them down. They are soft and pliable and have a lovely squidgy feel to them. We've sent some in to school for him as well as ds2 now, as they are dual purpose - they improve his pencil grip and he's got something fairly inobtrusive to fiddle with in lessons.

Polter, we had one of those squashy balls - ds1 had it in his stocking at Christmas. Opened it at about 7.00 am and by 10 am he'd managed to explode the contents all over the living room. I had a slight panic and had to google to make sure it was just flour and nothing dangerous. Grin

Thanks moose, I shall have a look into them! I like the fact that they are something children would use in school anyway and maybe other children wouldn't notice.

Thanks guys! Found some bionic putty which was neglected at Christmas, brought it out this morning after seeing this thread.

1.5h in the car would normally guarantee escape attempts (ds2), violence (the dc), shouting (everyone) and needing to pull over (me). Not today Grin.

I haven't tried the softer one, so I would hate to say and get it wrong. I imagine it would be closer in texture to blue tack but still firmer. But it is very hard to pull apart So that would be an advantage. Wink. I got DS the medium one, and it is actually too hard for him to play with comfortably..... His problem is fine motor dyspraxia - so he is very weak in his hands. I should get the soft one to try really......
