I took DS1 (6yrs) there last year for an assessment, as he has dyspraxic tendencies, lacks concentration, is still bedwetting, and is extremely resistant to new experiences. The diagnosis was that he needs sound and light therapy, and because of the cost DH and I decided against it.
This evening DS1 has gone to his first Beavers session, and spent the first 40 minutes crying that he was scared, chewing his jumper and refusing to participate. This is the kind of behaviour that took us to the Sound Learning Centre in the first place; among other things they told us that DS1 is wired to get overwhelmed by change, noise and busy places (would give you more precise info but I'm at work, and don't have their report to hand).
I feel so sad for DS1 that he finds something as simple as going to Beavers for the first time (with two of his friends) so difficult, even though we made every effort to prepare him for it as best we could over this weekend, that he made a spectacle of himself today (which means people just think he's a pain, and don't see that he's actually sweet and funny and bright), and that DH is furious with him for not going in without a fuss.
So I'm now wondering whether we should sod the expense of the SLC (can't remember off the top of my head, but I think it was about £1,000) and see what a course of treatment there can do for him. But it's such a lot of money, and such a leap into the dark, that I would really like to hear about other people's experiences.
Many thanks
