Obsessions with my ASD DS

My DS who is 8 years old has a few 'pet' subjects which are his absolute passions. He can literally talk or think or read about a subject from dawn to dusk without hardly any breaks. When I try to distract him by taking away any books he is reading and suggesting an hours break he gets very distressed. The only way of stopping him is to take him out for a walk or to his friends for a play. Is there any harm in just letting him absorb himself in that days chosen subject?

Thanks for the reply PolterGoose, we are currently doing a project on his current favourite subject (which is so specific, if I tell you what it is, I will be 'outed' straight away!!!) He is home educated as the local school thought the best way to deal with an AS child is to 'make sure he know who is boss and he'll soon fall in to line'!! So as he is HE, this makes it eaiser for him to learn while still pursuing his passions.

I was just worried that there would be other people with AS children who thought I was totally doing the wrong thing by not distracting him away from his obsessions.
