I'm not sure if I am over sensitive but I am finding his character quite upsetting to watch. Maybe its because this could potentially be my daughter in future years ie with a learning difficulty.

It might be that his character is not supposed to have learning difficulties and im reading too much into it. Just wanted to know if i'm the only one???

I haven't seen it, I'm sorry. But Ricky Gervais is down there with Frankie Boyle in my opinion so I'm sure you're right.

It's on in the background. Don't like it, but just saw a superb moment where the LA person said to Derek:

'Would you agree to see someone, and be assessed for Autism?'
Derek said in a worried voice 'would it change anything?
LA guy said 'No, absolutely not'.
Derek said 'Don't worry about it then!'

Fab!

I saw it advertised on TV the other day and immediately felt uncomfortable. There's always the possibility that it might be many positive things but it's not for me.

Negative view v. Positive one

Nowadays I can't watch even Mr Bean or Fawlty Towers without wondering if theyre mocking men with ASD, though Hmm

Gottalovecosta · 31/01/2013 05:23

I personally found it upsetting to watch also, for the same reasons as you sovery. Mind you, I never 'got' extras or the office, I always wondered if I was missing the joke or something.

I am feeling too fragile about DD's problems and anxious about her future to appreciate Derek. [Sad]

Given his repeated wilful ignorance over the use of disablist language, I don't trust Ricky Gervais's intentions with this series. I have severe doubts about his sincerity and that's why I'm not even going to give him the tiniest 2 minute boost to his viewing figures.

ouryve · 31/01/2013 10:16

Mareeya - John Cleese has battled with some quite severe mental health issues in his life which is probably how he manages to get away with such a toe curling rendition of a man so uptight that he's constantly on the verge of a breakdown.

I saw a few seconds of the advert for it and immediantly thought "sick". Ricky Gervais is an absolute prat.

bishybashyboshy · 31/01/2013 13:00

TBH I saw a 2 minute glimpse of the advert a couple of days back and I thought I was reading too much into it too, so glad I am not the only one. I made my mind up then that it wasn't something I would be watching.

MareeyaDolores · 31/01/2013 15:55

Ouryve, thank you! Can watch again Grin

Ineedmorepatience · 31/01/2013 16:10

I gave it about 10 minutes, hated it and wont be wasting any more time in it.

I dont get Ricky Gervaise anyway so no loss.

Ineedmorepatience · 31/01/2013 16:11

On it of courseBlush

soverytiredofthis · 31/01/2013 16:24

I was speaking with my mum about this programme today and she agreed that just because someone may having learning difficulties does not mean they look any different to anyone else.
My daughter has severe learning difficulties but to look at her (when not wearing helmet or in special needs buggy) and not walking or eating etc she at a glance does not look any different to any other 3 year old.

So basically Im glad its not just me that was a bit upset. I wish I had seen trailer but DH insisted on watching as it was comedy!!

The only bit I liked was the caretaker telling the LA to basically F* OFF. Wish I could say that to certain people sometime :)

I thought it was all fine except for the face he does. Unfortunately for the self-sainted Ricky, it is uncomfortably like the "hilarious" faces he does on Twitter when using the ugly word "mong" (and then defending its usage on postmodern grounds). He is now trying to make up for all that I reckon.
