dd is 6 and is in MS school, she has cerebral palsy and is statemented with 33 hours of 1-1 support. She is bright and chatty and great verbally. She was assessed before Christmas and we've been told that she is dyslexic. We have a team around the child meeting tomorrow. I have read up a bit of some of the big dyselxia websites but I do not really know how dyslexia is handled in schools and what I can ask for.
Dd's TA is not trained in in learning difficulties at all and I want to ask that for at least some of her school day she is supported by a more specialist TA.
At the moment she gets sent home with a list of spellings (whole class gets the same list) - an example of her level of writing is 'mi cat is caplie' - my cat is called Lily. The spellings this week include 'cygnet' , 'pyramids' and 'crystal'. I think it's madness that she is trying and failing to learn these spellings when she needs to go back to the basics.
Also if she wants to write a longer piece of work but can't manage, a TA writes it in luminous pen and dd has to copy over the words. No purpose at all, dd has no clue and is just tracing shapes.
Does anyone out there have a similar aged child with dyslexia in a school which is actually getting it right? I'd love to know how to pitch it at the meeting tomorrow as I tend to go in all guns blazing - used to teach secondary so have a very cynical insider's view.
thanks
