Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Birthday present help

I hope you don't mind me asking for some help here- DS has been invited to a joint party of three children from his nursery class (all turning 4), one of whom has SN. I don't know his particular diagnosis, but he is non-verbal and doesn't interact with the other children very much. As I don't know him or his family very well at all, I'm at a loss for birthday present ideas. He favours musical toys with flashing lights and buttons etc but I am obviously desperate not to offend. I'm giving the other two books and would do the same for him but again, am unsure what would be appropriate.

Any ideas? Just something useful like a t shirt or similar? I won't get the chance to speak to his mum, as he is only at nursery one day a week and it's the day before the party!

Obviously I do realise that all children, SN or otherwise, are different, and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach here. Just after some thoughts/ideas really.

Thanks for the suggestions! True, t shirts are terribly boring to small children! I would like to give a book (as that's what the other two are getting) so will look into some button ones/info ones. DS loves rockets and space at the moment so would delight in choosing something like that for his friend.

Brilliant, I feel reassured!

I have never been offended by any present bought by one of the DSs friends/aquaintances :) I have always just been relieved that they have wanted to come to his party. One of DS2's favourite toys was a set of 'car keys' which he was given 2 or 3 years ago at a birthday party, which make a sound when he presses the button.

I've had a quick Google for you.

The only space related noisy book I could find was this one. Although the noises activate as you open each page, rather than pressing buttons. It seems to be out of stock on Amazon and 2-3 week delivery at Waterstones, but a local Waterstones store might be able to get it in stock more quickly for you.

I thought this Noisy Robots book looked like fun.

or there's

This one which is more musical?

Forgot to say, you are lovely for caring - so many people wouldn't and I'm sure his mum will really appreciate the thought, whatever you decide to get. Smile Thanks

LittleMissGreen good to hear of no offence caused! That was my main concern.

moosemama thanks so much for your links and suggestions, I am in the sticks so no local bookshops for me, but robots would also be a big hit with ds1 and I know he'd enjoy giving a present he's excited about. I'll get ordering...

Thanks again everyone.
