Aaaarghh - need a Bovril substitute!

DS2 has become addicted to Bovril - have been giving him the tiniest scrape but he now demands it every time he has bread, which is often. Unfortunately his eczema has really flared up since he started eating it - I googled and the images of a yeast-induced rash look exactly the same as his - although I can't be completely sure that's what's causing it. Am aware that many people keep their autistic children yeast -free - we don't, but as DS is on the gf/cf diet, he has hardly had any yeast prior to the Bovril onslaught.

Want to try a few weeks without it, but this is going to be a nightmare unless I can offer an alternative - any ideas for something that would deliver the same salty, savoury hit?

M&S sell some frozen concentrated stock. I have the vegetable one, which is yeast free. Might be worth checking. It's expensive, but might help with weaning him off it.

Other thoughts - Kallo Just bouillon, or maybe instant miso soup, if he's fine with soya. Goodness direct is worth checking out.

What about the stuff to spread on the pancakes for Chinese crispy fried duck? Or a gourmet version of bovril

Marigold vegan bouillon powder has that elusively addictive umani flavour and is vegan, dairy, gluten, nut, soy & yeast free.

Trouble is that it's not beefy and that it's yellow - totally the wrong colour. I find it's hits the same spot bovril does on freezing cold days. Bonus is that it's sold in all the major supermarkets & Holland & Barratt so no treking for days to find it Wink. I also like that it's lower salt than many commercial equivalents, (better for their kidneys).

Or you could make beef stock/tea in the slow cooker Mrs beaton stylee and then freeze mug size portions in bags to microwave as needed. That'd be the super Mum approach & would fit with all the nutrient therapy Autism rec's like GAPS and the Sunderland protocol, Robin Pauc etc.

Oh you're all so lovely - but Poltergoose is right, it's a spread I'm looking for. Have found one in Australia - Vege Spread - but can't find any way of getting it here. Would even ship it as it lasts for ages. Wonder if there are any Australian Mnetters who'd post me a pot?

various people on food thread have suggested miso, or gentlemans relish. But I ideally want something I can buy - make most of Ds's food from scratch, but the thought of making batches of homemade Bovril every few days fills me with dread....Grin

No, we use a mix (Orgran alternative grain) that is gluten, dairy, soya and yeast free. Makes a decent loaf too, surprisingly!
