Income figures and CA

I have just had my income figures for 2011-12 from my accountant.

Taking CA to one side, my net income from earnings is around 7300.

With CA, I will have tax to pay of around 500.

I am no longer claiming CA as I started a job last April which was well over the limit.

I have always been assessed yearly and my earnings have always been around £5000 but I knew last year was more complicated so I instructed an accountant in November. She has just got back to me with the final figures.

The CA have not asked for my accounts for 2011-12 as I am no longer claiming but clearly I will let them know about this.

I am really worried about this and suddenly having to repay it all. Has anyone been in this situation? Will they want it all back at once?

Also, if I have to pay the CA back, I will have overpaid tax by 500 quid.

Help!!

Net earnings for CA purposes aren't quite the same as net earnings for tax purposes.

Your average net earnings were £140.38 per week. That's £40 over the threshold.

Firstly:

  1. Were you earning the same amount each week, or were you earning a small amount one week and a much larger amount another week, for example. When did you start earning the money that totals £7300?
  1. Did you have any child care costs at all?
  1. Did you make any pension contributions?

Thanks for this. It is really helpful.

No pension contributions. I looked into setting one up as I heard you could backdate the payments but to make any difference I would have to put in about £80 per week as I can take into account only half the sum put in.

The sums I worked each work were never the same. Sometimes, I would earn alot one week, other weeks nothing at all. Equally expenses change from week to week. That's why it has always been assessed annually. Can I now argue that some weeks I was earning nothing so can claim those weeks?

I am not sure the point where I reached figures 7300. Can I argue that until that point I was ok to claim?

Because both income and expenditure have been worked out annually I am not sure when this would be.

You'd need to provide them with evidence of the weeks your earnings exceeded and fell short of the threshold, then you should be entitled to CA for those weeks which were under £100

That is really helpful and a huge relief thanks. I didn't know they would work it out like that.
