Urgent advice needed about moving

Been offered a house that has been specially adapted for a disabled child

Hopefully everyone remebers that I have had probs with funding as for our house to be adapted and will cost and extra £10,000 for them to do it.
think OT and housing adaptions would rather us move to save them money

Viewed the house and it is fantastic huge rooms, huge back garden etc
but the final decision relyed on ds2 as it is for him at the end of the day
even though he cant talk he seemed pleased with house

so we are going for it

but would i be cheeky in asking social services for new carpets and vertical blinds as there is no way these in this house would fit
and help with removals costs
dh has put his foot down on this one as he has seen us arsed about for the last 4 yrs and says they do it for everyone else
I dont know

we are not skint iykwim but will need money to buy new appliances for kitchen which we will pay for ourselves

but with added costs it will break us
also with the fact that the above depts would rather us move

I dont know what to do as i am not a money grabber and never asked for nothing
until now

so please help me and give me your wisdom and experiences
before i am presumed to be a cheeky get
or a mug
xxx

I'm afraid i don't know what is the 'norm'. Whats in the house currently? If its acceptable but just not to your taste then yes its cheeky. But if the house is in poor condition and needs new carpets and blinds and if this is something that the council normally provide in council housing then go ahead and ask for it.

I Had a friend who moved into a council house and I think she got a grant. she was asingle mum and on income support though.

It never hurts to ask.

If SS can't help, could you approach the family fund?

coppertop · 23/04/2006 13:23

I don't know what the usual policy is but I would definitely ask. Compared to the £10,000 it would have cost for your current house to be adapted, you're asking for only a small amount.

Good luck! :)

Thanx girls:)

Never asked, felt cheeky tbh LOL
But we got the house and will be moving in next few weeks:)
So what if we go skint, been there, done that so can do it again.

Even though i will be sad to leave here and our estate, it is a very close community
it is the best thing we can do for ds2 as it is all adapted for his needs
and the other kids are happy and like it too:)
