Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Should I let my nearly 7 yr old dd with special needs have her ears pierced?

She said to me today she wants it done. I am always encouraged when she is interested in her appearance but not sure if I should or not? What do you think?

would she be able to take care of them herself?

Blossomhill · 22/04/2006 10:45

Does she understand that it will hurt ??

hmm, not sure...is she going to get into situations where the earrings might get snageed? This was the reason we were not allowed earrings at school until I went to secondary school, and I think it was perfectly reasonable.

My 3.5 year old is begging and I told her no. I think that if they can understand that it will hurt to have them done and that pierced ears need to be taken care of then it is fine. She doesn't get that though.

I would go by how happy I would feel at this age if she didn't have sn. If you would do it for a child who didnt have sn then the answer is yes.

I wouldn't let my NT 9 year old have them done. A couple of reasons, it hurts and she would yell the place down! She couldn't look after them and keep them clean. She might fall and tear them.

Well have been and had them done and dd was so brave :)

She only has some tiny studs with crystals in, so all in all went well!

Hope she lets you get them out when the time comes, my friends dd wanted her done when she was 6 and she took about a year to be able to get the first ones out. Her dd wouldnt let her near them.

Blossomhill · 22/04/2006 18:24

charliecat - me too. i am just so proud with the way she dealt with it when it was being done. She does look more grown up already with them in!

Hi blossomhill... my daughter had hers done when she was 5... she didn't flinch, or show any emotion (funily enough) whilst I was hiding behind the display...

Blossomhill · 22/04/2006 22:28

rummum - oh really? Well my dd said to the woman doing it "you're not going to chop my ears off are you? Grin

She is so proud and I am impressed that she has actually taken pride over her appearance. Although have to say she always has done.
