have you looked at Makaton? It really does reduce frustration.

Hi, dd will be 5 soon and has speech delay. She is a very visual learner and we found the PECS system worked better for her.
I can't do any links as I'm on my phone (and it's too complicated Smile ) but the basic premise is that you have pictures of common objects (eg toys, drink, favourite foods, activities etc) and your ds would use these to communicate what he wants. When he gives you the picture the idea is that you say the word so he will hear and hopefully repeat. You can get line drawings but we found that photographs worked better as she recognised the object iyswim.
It reduced the tantrums of sheer frustration that she would have which made life a little easier.

We found PECS useful too, and DD quickly learned to use it to ask for things she wanted. Very handy for food ;) Is he seeing a speech therapist already? DD picked up PEC in three sessions, so it's quite a quick win for them and for you.

Thanks I'm definetly going to look into this Grin he is seeing a speech therapist and has even been for a assessment at child development centre which diagnosed speech delay as we were worried may be slight autism but they seem to think it is just his speech :/
