Messmonster and I are very close to booking a venue having looked at various options in London. Messmonster has put in a huge amount of time and energy so thank you to her for that. Smile
Date will be February 23rd.
Does anyone now have any particular requests or areas they wish to focus on? I will make note of them and do my best to deliver.
My colleague and I will be doing some sessions simultaneously to hopefully give you all an increased choice.
I'll keep an eye on this thread and post again very soon.

Hi, really looking forward to coming along. It's all new to me - especially looking forward to hearing the stuff about social skills. I'd love to find ways to encourage ds to listen more in class, rather than assuming comments aren't directed at him. And also to ask if he needs help rather than be quiet and passive.

Moondog - is it possible to do a bit of clarification on reinforcement and how to stop it being a bribe?

Ds now sometimes ask what will he get if he does something I want him to - usually reading or school work. I have tried fading but he still wants to know his reward.

What should I have done and what should I do now?

moondog · 23/01/2013 15:20

We'll do a chunk on social skills/listening skills.
Yes, Trying, my colleague will have a presentation on that-issue of fading reinforcers so that the task itself becomes intrinsically reinforcing is essential.
If you use extrinsic reinforcement, you always, always always need to plan how you will 'thin the reinforcement schedule.'

LOL. DS is allowed to play on google earth whilst waiting for his school taxi to come. The faster he gets dressed and ready to shoes, the longer he gets to play on google earth. If we have to help him get dressed we do it SLOWLY.

Can't imagine getting dressed in itself becoming intrinsically reinforcing though. Perhaps when/if he becomes interested in girls.

Well, life is full of tedious but necessary things that, the quicker we do them, the quicker we get to move onto the really interesting stuff.

My kids are on an hour a day of tv/computer time at present.
(So am I for that matter and I told them that we all had to rein ourselves in)
They have to decide how to spend the 60 minutes.
New regime met with some resistance (aka an extinction burst) but this behaviour was not reinforced in any way and now all has settled. Grin

Hi I've just seen your thread and would be interested to come to this- 1 son 3 yrs old with asd, have been on earlybird but found it frustrating as wanted more specific info on various topics covered there only to first inch ( pecs, teacch, visual aids/ boards etc).
Is ABA the same as intensive interaction?

Inaflap · 24/01/2013 14:16
