C&P from my thread in chat, I thought that perhaps some of you lovely ladies might be able to help :)

Need to order these tonight!

My father has heard that he will be having a double cochlear implant rather than single and this will mean he will be in total silence for weeks after the OP. We didnt know this until today, we thought he would have some, albeit little, hearing with only having one ear done.

I know some sign language (more than him!) but no one else in the family does so I want to order 3 copies of a DVD that is family friendly as the kids need to learn too. One for us, one for mum and dad and one for my sister and her family. I know that there are the BSL ones, but are there ones that teach how to "get by" in sign language (such as one might use for a foreign language before a holiday, is there such a things as a SL phrase book?!) with popular phrases etc?

Any recommendations would be gratefully received :)

Hmm, might be worth looking for the ones for kids maybe? If you are talking at the same time will be more SSE than BSL, so it's more vocab you are looking for, any BSL video will include grammar and nmf, so maybe not what you are looking for..

Do you know the forrestbooks website, fabby for all things d/Deaf, Grin just google forrest books, or forrest book shop, can never remember which.

There are also lots of free apps with signs, if you wanted to work out which ones you would find useful.

Also might be worth thinking about the practicalities as well... how is he going to wake up, (vibrating alarm, if he doesn't have already) how will you let him know you are coming into a room so you don't surprise him, (flick lights on and off) etc etc..

Please excuse if you know all these things or are doing them already,Blush

feel free to pm me if I can be of use. Grin

another vote for forest books here. There's a book called bsl for dummies that might be worth a look at, it has a short dvd in the front cover and is often used by people starting their level 1 bsl course. Otherwise if you want vocab books I really like the Cath Smith dictionary, it'd probably have a lot of the signs you'd need. There's loads of websites that would be worth looking at, I'll have a look after the school run and post some for you. There's also a phone app called mobilesign that's worth a look.
