DLA mobility, tax disks and working

Hi. My DS has just been awarded HR Mobility. (Sadly no surprise as due to CP he cannot walk they didn't even ask for any medical reports etc from the various professionals involved ). Anyway I got the thing about the tax disk with the award.

What I want to know is how this works in our situation. My DH doesn't drive. I do but we only have one car.

I mainly use the car for DS, hospital appointments and the like plus visiting family and a few bits and pieces of shopping. BUT very ocasionally drive with work (no more than 100 miles a year). Therefore I have to be insured for business mileage. Can I have the tax disk and still use the car for business.

Strickly speaking no you can't. here tells you the rules. I do know people that do drive cars with a except disk and seam to get away with it for long periods of time. (my sil for one. Long story) The risk you would run is if you had a accident the insurance could decided not to pay out as the car would not be taxed correctly.
I have a motability car. It is for my use, but as I am a mum it can be used for thing you would expect me to do being a mum. Like taking the dds to a club or doing the shopping. My dh has used it to go to a church meeting in the evening when his car has been off the road but has always picked up milk ect on the way back. I would not let him drive it to work or use it for work as it wouldn't be there for me.
Just a thought but have you thought about what it is costing use to have business insurance and Tax. Would it be cheaper to just hire a car when you need one for work. It may not but something to think about.
You may be able to get funding for dh to learn to drive from a charity or here You may not but you won't know without asking. Sorry for the long message. I kept thinking of things that might help.

If you get a motability car I have always understood that the car has to be used for the benefit of the disabled person and that going to work and earning money is considered a legitimate use of the motability car.

I know you were talking about tax disks and the rules do seem a bit different there but that is what we have always understood so while the motability car is usually mine for driving DS to school and so on, if DH needs to swap cars and take this one to work, or work meeting elsewhere in the country ( all close, not the other end of the country!) then that is absolutely fine.

Thanks both. The tax isn't much so maybe just easier to pay it.

Hairy unless you have agreed that and have it in writing from motability that is not the case. Motability car are only insured for personal, domestic and pleasure
Below is copied from their website

The car is covered for social, domestic and pleasure purposes including travel directly between home and permanent place of work, at all times under the certificate of insurance. If you require to use the car for any other purpose, please contact RSA Motability to request a Business Use application form.

If you dh is driving it for work then he would not be insured
It says else where on their website that it must always be available for the disabled person. It one of the things that is there to protect the disabled person. But it has meant I have the meant we are a 2 car house when we could most of the time manage with one.
