Eye Q

Has anyone any knowledge on Eye Q supplements and at what age I can give them to by DS. He is a bit hyperactive (not diagnosed by GP) but he does has right hemiplegic cerebral palsy and I think the Brain irritation makes them a bit testy. I was wondering if I could give them to him he is four. He was almost completely hyper tonight being rude to DH, shouting, throwing himself around, and just generally behaving in out of control manner. He doesn't have severe CP.

Can anyone help with this? I have posted in health but not had any replies.

EyeQ specifically can make children (esp those with SN) hyper due to the Evening Primrose Oil. There are other oils that are considered better than EyeQ for children with SN. If you try searching the archive you should find plenty or switch Sn to alphabetical and look up Fish Oils or EyeQ. I'm sorry, I don't give my DS oils so I can't remember the exact types that are considered better.

Efalex or any of the omega 3 only oils can be better if there is a hyper problem.

heartinthecountry · 20/04/2006 20:27

I give fish oils to my dd who is 3.5. You just may need to adjust the dose you give. We use the adult eskimo oil which doesn't have evening primrose.

mumball · 21/04/2006 00:16

Thanks for that, I didn't know Evening Primrose oil made chldren hyper, and I didn't know EyeQ contained this, I shall look up some other oils then, Davros do you not give as you think it doesn't work? At the moment I am just looking around to see what would help him, he flys off the handle at the smallest thing, I just want him to stay calm and not get so distressed. Perhaps I should ask his consultant before giving him anything, I certainly don't want to make him feel worse.

Thank you Davros, jimjams & heart in the country.

if you're just after the omega 3 oils there are other foods that you could use instead of buying fish oils

linseed/flaxseed is higher in omega 3 than fish and can be used in baking (lovely in flapjacks)

also, obviously, in various fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel)

starlover · 21/04/2006 00:20

organic milk is also naturally high in omega 3

mumball · 22/04/2006 21:50

Thanks for that Starlover, DS won't eat fish, doesn't drink an awful lot of milk, perhaps I can try a combination. But I think supplements is the way to go.

mumball, I don't give fish oils for various reasons:

  • DS won't take anything! It would be extremely difficult to get him to take oils in any form, even with tricks, disguise etc
  • I don't want to interfere with what he eats too much as it is already very limited, so messing about trying to disguise things in the food he eats could put him off the few things he likes
  • It would take a lot more than fish oils to have any significant impact on his ASD and learning disability. Fish oils are one of the few things I dont classify as "mumbo jumbo" so I think they are worth giving if you can but, for us, the potential downsides far outweigh any likely benefits imo.
sphil · 23/04/2006 17:24

We have found that EyeQ makes Ds2 more hyper at night (he is autistic). Our dietician recommended flaxseed oil (but it's VERY oily so DS2 won't take it) or crushed hemp seeds mixed into food.

It would definitely work well for us if I could add seeds to flapjacks, bread etc, but I thought you weren't supposed to heat them? Anyone else know about this?

KarenThirl · 23/04/2006 18:56

Certainly you're not supposed to heat the oil as it reduces the potency of the omega 3 content, but I don't know if that would apply to the seeds raw and whole.

tobysmumkent · 23/04/2006 21:45

Slightly off the theme of this thread (sorry) but if heating destroys the omega 3, does that mean that if you warm the "clever" omega milk (40 secs in m/wave)that it's destroyed? (guess how I thought I was being clever and getting some fish oil into my son.....!) Should I just switch back to organic milk - does giving that warmed up destroy the Omega bit too? anyone know?

alison222 · 23/04/2006 22:31

My Ds (Not SN though)is allergic to fish and we give him one from the health food shop from flex/pumkin oils. its made for infants and is the "junior" formula tastes foul though

sphil · 24/04/2006 18:32

Tobysmum - that's a really good question! I've been heating it too. I could e-mail DS2's nutritionist at BIBIC and ask her.

tobysmumkent · 24/04/2006 21:45

sphil - yes please (sorry to continue taking this thread off to one side....) - nice to know I'm not the only one!

Peachyclair · 24/04/2006 22:25

EyeQ made Sam hyper, so Bibic recommended flax seed oil, which you can get in capsules and oil forms from holland and barratt emarkably cheaply. he tolerates it much better.

Chocol8 · 24/04/2006 22:50

I would say that Flax seed oil tastes bleugh so I take it in a smoothie to disguise the taste. I did try hemp oil which everyone reckons is better, but I didn't like it at all!

Ds takes Eskimo Kids and it works much better than the Eye Q imo as it made him hyper and very aggressive when I didn't give it to him.

mumball · 29/04/2006 23:19

oh wow, thanks everyone I had no idea, I'm so glad I asked on MN before I gave DS anything. I've just managed to get my DS to eat Hob Nobs (chocolate coated) (oh they are for extra fibre as he is severely constipated) so I might have a chance with flap jacks) will also try Holland and Barratts Flack seed oil and see if I could diguise it in anything. Thanks again you are all brilliant!

Also be VERY careful about giving anything (esp EyeQ) to anyone who is on Epilepsy meds.
