coppertop- i thought exactly what you said about 'jaqui's life'on video swaps.....bit like going down to 'blockbusters' and paying to hire it out...but with me you get the added 'bonus' of my 'looooooooong' emails too!!!

Jaqui....not putting toooooo much pressure on you but..... after watching 'the' programme have always felt there is a 'series' in ther waiting to be filmed- it would be great to have whole programmes dedicated to all the many issues we face as SN parents!!! Keep on at the BBC..!!!

This was a genuinely informative and illuminating programme, and I don't think it would have been made without someone of Jaquis clearly magnificent personality. It was a fantastic public service in terms of education, awareness and inspiration. Jaqui, you are a real leader and motivator, we need far more women like you, and the world would be a far happier place if more children had mothers with your love and committment. Whatever has happened, I hope you are getting support and love for yourself, somehow, somewhere.

MrsForgetful - I emailed you - did it get to you?

mrsforgetful · 15/01/2004 16:17

yes! I replied- so i've just sent the reply again...let me know on here or to my email acct if you don't get it!

Oakmaiden · 15/01/2004 19:25

Got it this time.

MrsF - I still think you'd make a really good subject for a book or documentary. You're an inspiration yourself with the way you cope with your own AS and other problems, while still managing to do so much for your three boys - especially the fight to get ds2 a diagnosis. Get writing, Mrs F!

Only if you'd come and help hide the ironing/socks()/washing up etc!!!! I was only thinking today how as a child i can remember my mum saying 'how many peas' when serving tea....and i can remember answering things like "7" or such like!!!! I remmember being aware that i had 'took her literally' and reckon this is the same with ds1 now....I still have these moments...my mum has a teddy keyring and yesterday she asked me to "put the teddy in the door"....so out of what appeared shear devilment i squashed the teddy into the closing door! ( or depending on whether you like teddies!)- then i waited for her to notice. Now why i mention this is that i frequently hear things that are said and there is a momentary 'flicker in my mind' where i 'take it litterally' then i 'convert it' in a flash and rationalise it. It's the same with word play ....which Luke Jackson loves (me too....and coppertop and i think is it Eulalia too who loves word play???)....sometimes i will hear a word someone says and then whilst they are still talking i will toss the word around in my mind- and often end up thinking how silly it is...sometimes i even doubt the spelling of something on paper..it can be the simplest of words yet to me it looks silly!!!!

My most recent example of taking a simple comment so literally that it didn't 'flicker' and 'flash' through my mind...rather it lingered so i missed the next 2 or 3 minutes of what was said.....
I was at my 'slimming world' meeting and the consultant said that "Mrs X had even wanted to take the scales away on holiday last week" At that point I began 'fretting' over how we would have all been weighed if she had taken the scales....only a few minutes later did i 'click' that she had not meant the class scales.....but her own ones from home!!

And finally....just to keep this relavent to Luke Jackson.....in one of the programmes i videod (yes....coppertop,rexandben,oakmaiden and popsycal...it's the same tape you will eventually see!!!)......Luke refers to 'following people' around....he's refering to getting from A to B at secondary school.....and I too can relate to this (painfully!).....
My husband still laughs whenever we go to a motorway service station as along while ago (pre kiddies) we stopped at one and I followed him from the car- the nest thing I knew we were BOTH in the MEN's loos!!!! He says the funniest bit was that i had sandals on and all he could hear was the 'flip flap ' sound of my feet as they pattered along!! I've done this before- but been drunk....so don't spose that counts!

MrsF! You'd better hope that the Teddy Bear Police don't read about you squishing one of their number in the door. You'd be made to do Community Service at Teddy Bear Picnics for the rest of your days!

I know what you mean about thinking about words. If you say the same word over again enough times it really sounds strange. I drive dh mad by asking stupid questions about words. Last night for example i asked him why the past tense of 'glow' wasn't 'glew'. After all you don't say 'growed', do you? This led to wondering about whether this would make the words to '"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" into "You would even say it glew". Just throw me in a padded cell now!

Ds1 tends to take things literally too. Yesterday he was scraping a chair across the floor, despite being told not to. Dh said "you're pushing your luck, aren't you?" Ds1 replied innocently, "Nooooo! Not push luck - push CHAIR!"

Sorry, MrsF, but I'm still busy hiding my own ironing etc. Portage starts next week and the place is as cluttered as ever!

Eulalia · 17/01/2004 18:13

ds pointed something out the other day - I asked him if he was fed up and in response he started talking about eating.... why do we say 'fed up'??

Anyway his speech is weird, I mean 'bread soup' meaning 'tomato soup'! I mentioned this on another thread..... sorry going off subject here..

coppertop · 17/01/2004 21:55

I could never understand the expression "Money doesn't grow on trees". Bank-notes are made out of paper, which comes from....

jmb1964 · 17/01/2004 22:51

Changing a battery today - ds1 (AS) 'Mummy you said the old battery was flat, but it looks exactly the same as the new one to me' I LOVE this sort of thing - really makes you think about language in a different way.
Another favourite was 'no, you're not a rotten mummy, you're very ...fresh'!
Off the thread, sorry - but I too have loved Luke's programme, and gained hope and faith in the future from it - thanks Jacqui for sharing your wonderful family with us all
