What makes a diagnosis of ASD or Dyspraxia or even both. They look so similar so how do you know which to diagnose.

Dyspraxia is primarily physical coordination and motor planning difficulties whereas ASD is more interested in social communication and understanding. There is plenty of scope for overlap but often diagnosis will focus on whichever is the more dominant.

What LIZS says. Both overlap considerably.

Dyspraxia is a disorder of movement, purely. It is often associated with difficulties with working memory, sequencing.
It's usually diagnosed by a combination of OT and Psychologist with a medical screen to exclude any metabolic/neurological issues.

ASD is a failure of social imagination and communication. Children with ASD often have difficulties with movement, showing dyspraxic elements.
Usually diagnosed by the wider team including SaLT, Psychologist and Paediatrician.

Both tend to have difficulties outside the core problems e.g. sensory processing, self esteem, organisational skills.

Hope that helps?
