Just wondered if anyone's done this? Ds1 has to have laxatives stimulants and softeners to get him to go?

Wednesday he went to the toilet big time and I mean big time. He's gone to the toilet yesterday and today just once. He's wiping himself as he thinks he has some soiling but there's nothing, just a bit of clear liquid but he can probably feel it.
Ds1 meanwhile looks awful. V pale even more than usual. Dark eyes. Cannot be bothered attitude towards anything that needs doing.

Just wondered Sheila should be bring meds down

I wouldn't bring the meds down yet to be honest.
My DS2 has been impacted quite a few times (ending up in hospital) and when it finally starts to shift there tends to be so much we think..ahh good that's it. BUT there is usually still a lot more.. colons can back up all the way round and it may be that your son's bowel has cleared a large amount but there is still a lot more higher up which needs to work its way through.
What is he taking? Stuff like movicol is great but it doesn't shift it in one mass and we were advised to keep our DS2 at high doses for a few days until we were absolutely sure he was completely cleaned out, then gradually lower it to a maintenance dose as there is often a huge amount of runny poo still to come.

Hope your ds1 feels better soon... severe constipation is just awful.

The advice from a very good Gastro paed we saw for ds1 was that more often than not the problems with constipation return because we tend to under treat it. It is better to over treat it as it is more beneficial in the long run.

is he on movicol? we have similar issues with Dd. her paed told us that thin liquidy poo is probably just overflow and if this hapoens to increase the dose. also, once you had a clearout keep the dose up for a couple of days and only start to reduce very very slowly (we go down about 1/2 sachet a day). reducing faster will make Dd constipated again. also, after a lot trial and error we found out Dd needs a maintance dose of 4 daily to keep thing moving. hth

yes dev, overtreating rather tan undertreating is what our paed said as well.
