My son is 29 months and being assessed by the CDC team for many issues and was led to believe that it was 95% dead cert that they were looking ASD diagnosis.

We had the meeting on the 2nd of Jan and I have received a summary of things at the top it says:

Diagnosis 1: Social Communication Disorder- Awaiting further assessments.
Diagnosis 2: Auditory processing difficulties and sensory issues.

I am kind of concerned about the 1st one as does that mean they don't think my DS has ASD and that he has Social communication disorder.??

in the summary they have put in that the ed psychologist has noted his language and communication difficulties, in addition to his sensory processing difficulties with play and social interaction.

OT have said that DS has been noted to have auditory processing difficulties as well as a lot of sensory difficulties.

I think the only further assessment is the SALT who has seen him now but was unwell before the meeting so could not give her report and the Dr and OT observing him at nursery.

My son has very repetative play, get very upset if thing are changed - screamed blue murder and would not leave the house when it snowed. has to have 2 biscuits one in each hand or he gets very very upset. No idea of danger and loves to run out to look at car number plates and hedges ( He thinks a ninky nonk may come out I think). Routine has to be the same- same route to nursery, he has to walk on a certain path or he will drop to the floor and not move.

Has a fantastic memory and can sing you jingle bells but could not tell you his name, He only has copied speech- this is in context some of the time, such as he will say to me in the morning "Get you up".

He has more expressive language than receptive or this is how it seems and he mirrors everything - from Language to how he waves (palm facing his face)- to the point where Baby Jake cbeebies puts his hand on the cheek of another child my DS will come and do this to me. All in the night garden figures have to be in the correct sections of the ninky nonk - and if you put them in the wrong one he will scream.

Has a very uneven response to pain, loves in the night garden the Pead described him as a very rigid little boy.

I am starting early bird on Friday so maybe that will help.

I have had a hell of a week with him and getting very angry at his nursery however the wording at the top of the meeting summary has had me in floods of tears- probably just being really silly and over reacting but I am now totally confused and don't know what to think.

Thanks that's makes a bit more sense and has made me feel a bit better.

The copying is what the SALT said was a good thing as she said that through memory they could make his copied speech better and in time functional.

Just having a really hard week and think this strange wording just set me off.

Thanks that made me cry :)- Ds could count from 9 months and loves to shout random numbers out - he loves them and can spend ages looking at the clock in the corner of the telly, but has never asked for anything/showed me anything or brought me anything - Unless its for me to perform a certain task i.e put iggle in the right compartment.

Your son sounds adorable! My DS can be loving on his terms and he is very hyper and bounces about so I am hoping one day we can reach that level- what scares me the most is he has no fear and no sense of danger and has a horrible habit of eating things he should not such as the plastic seal of my washing machine and at the moment is going through a phase of licking and sucking metal- so I really hope that improves with more and more input

Had to call his OT to arrange to set up his Breezi chair and mentioned it to her and she said that was just because the dr was waiting to see the SALT report to diagnose ASD- so again feel so much better.

Thanks so much for helping to turn around my day- it really has helped - sometimes its just something really silly that gets me x

I get the impression that social communication disorder is a softer word to use than the dreaded A word if they are trying to suggest that. Pity it just leaves us feeling confused though isn't!

It certainly had me confused as they had not mentioned that to me at anytime so came somewhat as a bolt out of the blue- and when you are treading water and trying to stay a float it sent me into a dithering wreck..Can cope With DS screaming all morning because he does not want to wear trousers/socks/shoes- not eating and having a difficult time but a silly letter sends me to pieces- Time for a large glass of wine .. or 3 x
