My Ds (4) had his second appointment today at the Hospital & has been confirmed that he is on the Autistic Spectrum they are not sure whether he has Aspergers or ADHD as they need to speak to his nursery etc.
He has been referred to a Speech Therapist even though I didn't think there was anything wrong with his speech .
I have been told every time he has a meltdown to record him .
So what happens now ?
Is there anything I need to do ?
What should I expect now ?

Thanks

hi, i am not going to be of a lot of help but thought i would comment about the speech therapist. it may not be because there is a problem with his speech as such but that they need to develop the language side of things, ie comprehension/understanding so that he can express himself better for example. In my area we get block sessions of about 5-6 appts (1 a week for about 30-45 minutes) and then we get work to do at home and school, then another year later they do the same.

in respect of recording the meltdowns keep a diary, put in it what triggered it. is it something you said, stopped him from doing or a change to his routine that you hadnt warned him about, put in how he behaved, how long it lasted and what you did (if anything) to stop it.

You may get appointments to see other professionals, eg educational/clinical psychologist but i am not sure on who.

If he has a lot of meltdowns have a google of PDA on the Nat Autistic Society website. The condition may not be exactly relevant but the info could inform the way you handle meltdowns and help reduce general anxiety. Has changed our whole parenting style and made our whole family happier and more relaxed.
