(Cross posted) moving home/school? Statement child

We are moving further away from DS current school and the long journey will make the school run a long nightmare on the bus with him and my other children.

I wanted to know, can I get transport for him to attend the same school (is there a minimum distance you have to live?) or can I push for him to get a place quickly in a school closer to home?

I had thought about home schooling while I waited for a place in a local school but think this will be too disruptive for DS as he does not adapt well to change and is better with the formal structure of a school environment.

He already has a statement with his school and is awaiting assessment for Dx of Aspergers/ASD.

Thank you in advance for any advice x

How far away will you be from the school? Is it still the same local authority?

The LA must provide transport to the nearest suitable school if is more than 2 miles away, or 3 miles for children over 8; also if the child's disability/SEN means that they can't get to school on their own. If you think your son qualifies, you should apply immediately, but also at the same time let them know which local school you want so they can start the process of consultation with them. They can't argue that he should be in a more local school until they have arranged a place, so the fact that they have to pay out for transport will probably make them speed up the transfer process. However, you obviously have to make sure that the local school can actually meet your son's needs.
