Disabled tax disc

Hello

I was wondering if we could apply for a disabled tax disc on behalf of a child. However if you use this disc in the family car would that be a problem if the disabled child was not in the car all the time? In other words does the disabled person have to be in the car in order for the vehicle to be used. Hope that makes sense. Am looking into motability and tax disc position but it all looks rather complicated.

Thanks

Theoretically you should be using the car "for the benefit" of the other person.
That might include things you do when the person isn't with you - like shopping or going to work.

if you are not going for a motability car, you get a tax exemption form. Can't remember if I got mine at DVLA or if DLA sends one. This covers the tax disc. Take this with you to get it renewed each year.

If you are going for motability they will sort the tax.

We have a disabled tax disc and use it for our family car. I think that's only fair when the disabled person is a child.

However I'm pretty sure you need to be receiving DLA at the higher rate for mobility in order to get the tax disc

Thanks that helpful. He has got higher rate mobility and I think the mobility scheme would be useful for driving him around but wondered how it worked when our other children were in the car. We would only have the one car but do not drive to work so it would only be family based but he would not be in the car the whole time.

I really wouldn't have any qualms re using the disc for the family car.
I can't imagine anyone with more than one child has a car they don't use if the disabled child is at school etc. Just wouldn't be workable

Thank you!

I actually phoned up the DVLA to check as the form I had didn't make it clear and I was worried about getting a huge fine or something. They said it was fine to get tax exemption for our family car.

Thanks Pixel.

anyone know if it is fine to get it for a family car when you also use it for business travel. We have one car so of necessity its a family car, also of necessity I use it to travel to clients for work and claim mileage for that travel?
