this thread made me feel sad and upset about the way our children and families are excluded from their nativity celebrations.

Well, we're not going to take it lying down.

Join me and WilsonJr for a virtual, mini-nativity at 10am on Christmas Eve.

Here's what you need to do:
Do something nice and nativity-ish with your DC and post about it. You can do whatever you like - sing, dance, or build a lego nativity in your DC's quiet space. Anything, as long as it's Christmassy and makes your DCs feel good.

All are welcome. If you can't do it at 10am, do it another time.

And if your DC did get through their nativity without any issues, post about that too Xmas Grin - that's how bloody inclusive we are!

Who's in?

I'll pop along! Xmas Smile

CatchingMockingbirds · 19/12/2012 17:40

DS's nativity was today, they have an ASD base and are a very inclusive school so will be popping over to talk about his nativity with you all.

ChristmasTreegles · 19/12/2012 17:43

I'm in as well. DS2's nativity at his SS is tomorrow morning. Still waiting to see whether or not he will put on the "sheep" costume. Xmas Grin

He refused to eat their "Christmas dinner" today, quite upset, as he thought he couldn't eat it because Christmas dinner is supposed to be at home with his family. So he sat in front of a meal he normally enjoys and refused to eat it.

Here's hoping the nativity goes a bit better.

We've been listening to different styles of Christmas music. Chipmunks Christmas, jazz saxophone music, big band music, Brenda Lee, and his new current favourite Gene Autry. It's really fun seeing him enjoying it all.

Oh god love him Treegles - he's right though! Xmas Grin
Catching, brilliant maybe we can all get some tips to ram down HT's throats gently encourage our schools for next year.

See y'all later

My little one was a "star" in the chorus, spent the entire performance picking his nose and eating it. He doesn't do singing or actions anyway. Then blanked me and his dad on the way out because "mummy daddy stay at ome".
The teacher managed to get him in his star hat and a black t-shirt!

blackeyedsusan · 20/12/2012 22:48

ds managed the first performance at school beautifully ( bit of looking away and not participating fully, but fantastic for ds) with ta sat on the floor directly in front of him to keep him behaving. unfortunately, this late night performance had a knock on effect the next day. one overtired camel came stomping up the aisle with grumpy camel expression, made a few held back distress noises on stage, turned away from the audience and was playing with the wire of the microphone with his feet, had his hands over his ears for the applause.

MummytoMog · 21/12/2012 00:44

I made DD the most beautiful sheep dress. She loved it - but didn't manage to make it onto stage. Sat outside her room tonight listening to her singing Jingle bells really nicely in bed. Shame she won't do that in front of her teachers...

hazeyjane · 21/12/2012 11:33

would it be ok if we joined you? ds is only 2.5, so not in the nativity, but if he could amble around touching things and putting his cheek against them, and making his 'happy noise', without me having to worry that he is spoiling it for everyone else, that would be lovely.

WeWilsonAMerryChristmas · 21/12/2012 12:11

All are welcome, come stars, come camels, come sheep, come touchers, come all ye faithful! Xmas Grin

DS was an octopus, I hope we can still come along Smile

WeWilsonAMerryChristmas · 21/12/2012 13:20

Come celaphods!

(At the risk of paraphrasing Emma Thompson in 'Love Actually' - there was an octopus present at the birth of Christ?) Xmas Grin

DS was a chicken in his nativity and even let them face paint a beak on.hes at a ASD school so I was very chaotic and hectic with a lot of kids on their own agenda but it was fun.
He's going to sing we wish you a merry Christmas in the mn sn nativity because believe me he's been practicing since June and is now word perfect :) but just a little well a blooming lot out of tune :)

boobybum · 21/12/2012 15:22

Wasn't strictly the nativity but DS's nursery class sang a 5min Xmas song. DS was the sleigh driver and sat beautifully well for the duration (in a world of his own tho!). He was oblivious to the fact we were there even though we were about 8ft from him but when he finally noticed us at the end we got a lovely big smile from him. He was fine with us leaving afterwards too as he'd found a discarded mince pie (how could we compete?!) - mmm pastry!!

ouryve · 21/12/2012 15:45

Neither of mine will stay in the hall long enough to be involved!

But in the past.

DS1 has been in the chorus of christmas trees playing their jungle bells. He stood there, not wearing a tree because he would have nothing to do with dressing up at the time, waving his bells in one hand and eating an apple. At that point, he'd stay in the hall if he had an apple to crunch.

His second time, he laid down on the stage and refused to budge, so almost got trampled by the wise men. He then hid behind the stage Blush

The next year was DS2's turn. He was a shepherd and surprised us all by dressing up. He might not be able to sing any words, but he can hum in tune and his 1:1 guided him through and patted out the rhythm of the songs on his lap at his insistence!

I've not had to do any watch my child on stage duty since then. DS1 has occasionally decided at the last minute that he'll help with the music or lighting for a class production, but would bolt if I actually turned up. I don't belong in school.

CwtchesAndCuddles · 21/12/2012 16:06

We have our church nativity on sunday morning - ds 5 ASD/ LD is invited to dress up and join in however he wants to! It could be interesting, all the usual congregation are used to him but the Christmas visitors may be in for a shock if my little shepherd turns bad.............

ChristmasTreegles · 21/12/2012 19:11

Well,DS2 actually sat through his nativity, wore his sheep costume, and sang We wish you a merry christmas with the rest of the children. He was very pleased with himself - this is the first nativity that he's actually made it through!

He is now happily tucked in bed (medicated, so nodding off), while his Gene Autry Christmas CD plays "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer." Xmas Grin
