My DS is coming up 8 and in a private school. He has been diagnosed with fine motor dyspraxia a d sensory processing disorder (sensory seeking).
His current therapies are OT, listening program and we have just started cogmed over the holidays. He also ha 2 one to one sessions ECG week at school with the senco - these focus on various things including his reading, plus he does kumon Smile
We just got his school report - we knew he was miles behind his peers, his reading is improving ( at beginning of summer, level 6, beginning of this academic year level 8, now level 11). His teacher has said he has made HUGE ( he did the capitals) progress , but is still behind (not surprising) - but I am a little concerned how far behind, and wondering what more I could do - or am I doing enough?
They say he is obviously a bright boy, but the feel I get from his report is that his literacy is holding him back.
With regards to Math's they are concerned he doesn't see the diff symbols . We are wondering about organizing extra 1 to 1 Math's support at school. Would you do that now or wait?
What else would you do do? I don't want to overload him, but want to help him as much as possible.

I would change from a regular private school to a specialist dyslexic school. I might be wrong but I thought private schools are quite academic places therefore your DS's struggles will increase as he moves up year groups.

Kumon English does not help the dyslexic child. A specialist dyslexic teacher for English, 1-to-1 is more effective. And Kumon Maths, again not the best type of support for a child struggling with maths as it's repetition and your DS does not see the diff symbols therefore 1-to-1 maths support at school is a good option. Sooner rather than later.

Best wishes

I would do Tinsley House for the difficulties you have mentioned.

We are contemplating moving schools, but this will not happen until the new academic year...... He is not diagnosed with dyslexia, and I am not sure that he has it. He has had a very fractured education until we moved here a year ago, and that coupled with the dyspraxia and SPD could explain his educational lag.
Interesting your comment on kumon English as I have a niece and nephew with dyslexia and it helped them hugely, maybe it depends on the particular form if dyslexia?
We do see your point with kumon Math's however, as it is just repetition , and he needs to be able to see the symbols and understand the concepts.
Indigo - as I was typing I thought if tinsley house, we did go and see the lady in Milton keys , but to be honest, I didn't feel comfortable with her. I will investigate further . Maybe we could see them just after new year.

Does anyone have any firsthand experience with emmer son house?
