ASD and ADHD

I know the crossover between Autism and ADHD type sympotms are very similar and they certainly seem to be confusing in my DS's case.

When my DS was 4/5 I contacted the community paed. to express my concerns about his 'traits'. She sat in a room with him for 5 minutes and said he was 'fine'. Now they suggested the SENco work with him and wanted to send me on a parenting course.

Fast forward to now, he's 9 years old, still has crossover traits and i'm so confused which way to turn. Last year his school teacher 'got' him and he progressed loads and we were all so proud of him. However, he's now in year 5 and taken a turn for the worst and going down hill very speedy. His teacher had labelled him as naughty and says he can behave but is choosing not to.

He has had an assessment with a specialist asd teacher, who says he was social and was interested in the things she was talking about, yet she spoke about his other 'traits' exactly how we see them.

He has also recently seen a Chartered Educational Psychologist, who has worked for various LA's with many years experience, who thinks DS is showing lots of obvious asd traits and maybe not enough adhd ones (I do actually agree with him) but still feel there is a big crossover. He is oing to write up a report and make his findings and observations known with regards to ASD.

I don't care what he is as long as he's supported so should I pre warn the school or wait and see what the report says, before stating what i'd like them to do for him.

My Dd1 is like that sweet, to many people she has lots of traits of both.

She is 24 now but she was seen by various proffs from age 4-9, eventually she was discharged with no diagnosis.

I was young then and had no experience of professionals.

When Dd3 came along and it was plain that she had asd (she is definitely not adhd lol), I was much more aware and armed myself with knowledge.

Since Dd3 got her dx I am more convinced than ever that Dd1 should have been diagnosed.
I would recommend reading some good books on the subject and making some notes about how your ds fits the profiles of each condition.

Also keep a diary of his issues and what causes them. Then ask your gp for a referral to a.development paediatrician.
