Hi there was wondering if anyone can help re ds and reading/writing. He has had glue ear for a long time and it has delayed his speech and really knocked his confidence. When he started school he had pretty much stopped talking to anyone except very close family and friends Sad

He had grommets in Oct 11 but they fell out in about Mar 12 then we had an interminable wait to get referred for hearing aids. In the meantime, his hearing improved lots and he didn't need them but it has since dipped again and he got his hearing aid last week (they decided right ear doesn't need it) He's doing really well with it.

Anyway school have been great with him and he is getting plenty of support. His confidence in social situations and speech have improved massively. But progress with reading and writing are slow. He understands what sounds letters and digraphs make but struggles to blend them (this improved massively when his hearing was better but has regressed again now it's down Sad ) I would love to know if there are any know strategies or techniques I could use to help him with this?

Have you thought about Kumon? We are doing Maths and English with DS and I am really impressed with it, and DS is showing huge improvement.
I don't mean the books, but the study system, where they do 10 minutes a day, and go to the centre once a week.
I like it because it is very systematic, it starts where your child is at (well actually a little below, so they find it V easy at first ) and makes sure they have all the building blocks to progress. Not being a teacher myself and DS having very similar issues as yours (along with Dyspraxia) I never really knew what I should focus on, and had a very scatter gun approach to helping DS academically.
We are just working along - the difference in his reading, spelling etc has been fab - Ended summer on level 6, started new school year on level 8, now on level 11.......I think because he had missed things due to hearing, and us moving around - there were pre reading or early reading skills that were missing, and this has helped him hugely.
FYI - we started in June.
