has anyone used a Bumbo to help with low muscle tone in their baby's trunk?

I have been using a corner seat recently with my 9.5 month old (not sitting etc, suspected cp) which he can manage quite well, but I wonder if a Bumbo might work his trunk muscles a bit harder? His physio's never heard of them so can't tell me (she's retiring in couple of months). Thank you

I use a bumbo - didn't know it had these qualities. Would be interested to see replies though, dd is 7months and not sitting yet.

We used a Bumbo too & thought it was great. It's so light you can carry child plus Bumbo at the same time and easy if you're moving around the house, hanging out the washing in the garden etc.

We used ours for ages and lent it to others, currently being used by a friend whose little boy has DS. Could you borrow one for a few days to see how you get on?

I've asked around for a Bumbo and there might be one I can borrow for a trial in a couple of weeks if it's not in use but I might just buy one - if it doesn't work I guess I can sell it on Ebay, they seem to go for a good price. I'm hoping it will help with his core strength and balancing. Are babies' backs nice and straight in them? My ds tends to want to sit on his sacrum rather nicely on his bottom iyswim, he needs something that will give him the right amount of flexion in his pelvis.

Hi ntt is Lis36 form scope have left a message further on down for you. Regards the bumbo seat I bought one for my little boy. His physio thought It looks quite good but his OT was a bit unsure, anyway I have started to use mine just for 5 minutes a day, he,s not to keen but hoping it will help strengthen him.

Hey Lismar nice to see you over here - have you had a look round Mumsnet? There are quite a few mums with kids with cp here. I've just left you a message on the Scope forum.

How long have you been using the Bumbo for? Have you tried a corner seat?

We used a bumbo with dd. I think it probably did help with core strength. My main reason for using it though was so that she could be sat up like her peers, rather than them all sitting and her lying.

I have only been using the bumbo the last 2 weeks, what is a corner seat?

ntt · 09/04/2006 16:54

It's \link{http://www.jenx.com/products/n_seating/cornerseat.html\this} made by the physio people Jenx - it's quite specialised. We were lucky enough to be loaned it by our physio, it goes on the floor so his legs are at a right angle and has a lovely large table with it so he can practice using his hands.

Hi ntt

I've got a blue Bumbo that I am more than happy to send on to you?

Helped DS loads when he was younger.

Let me know

Debbie

My ds, who has hypotonia, used one every week at the CDC and it helped him so much that I bought one for him to have at home (which I then donated to the CDC when he grew out of it). He really loved sitting in it :)

I've just been on the official website - www.bumbobabyseat.com - and it states that its suitable for use from six weeks old (or as soon as they can support their own heads unaided) to an age of approximately fourteen months.

Debs - thank you, what a kind offer, but I've just placed an order on line. Will email you today Smile

LRC - thanks for that, I'm glad to hear it worked for you, and it's good to know that he'll get a good few months out of it. What's the CDC?

Lismar - specifically asked ds's physio if I could borrow a corner seat after one of the mums at the centre recommended them.

I'm sure he feels less floppy this morning when I'm picking him up already!!

Hi ntt - CDC stands for Child Development Centre.

My ds used to attend the weekly Baby Group there when he was much younger - run by a Nursery Teacher and several Nursery Nurses. His Orthoptist and Speech Therapist also attended a couple of his sessions at the Baby Group. He also had regular appointments at the CDC with his then Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist (before they switched to home visits). One of his paeds was also based there.

It was at the CDC where we first heard about DLA and Carers Allowance and they also referred him to an Educational Psycholgist (with our permission, of course). Through them, we also found out about other groups/events happening in the Birmingham area for children with Special Needs.
