Hi,
I was just after a little advise from anyone who has been through a salt assesment with thier child. What exaxtly do they do and what are they assessing for.

My dd is 5 and I have been in touch with various hvs, ped docs since she was 2. Everyone has just said that I must be an over anxious mother!! Ha, it hasnt put me off and we finaly got to c a psycholgist for an assesment for asd.

We had a phone call today and they still cant make thier minds up after a cognitive test, school visit and lots of history being taken. They now want to do a salt. My dd has a good vocab, had no delayin speach and can hold a conversation so just wondering why this assesment?

As usual we have been left to work this out for ourselves so any advise would be greatfuly received
Thank you

I imagine they will be looking at more higher level language skills, such as sequencing/inferencing/literal use of language and social skills - ability to understand emotions etc.

My dd 3 had an assessment, well I say an assessment she did 3 sections of the book with the SALT several weeks back (which the SALT said she would continue to do over a period of time so not to bore her) and I haven't seen her do anything out of the book since Confused but she came to the conclusion that my Dd was picking up everything that was being said to her, then struggling with her expressive language (can't seem to find the words to say but if asked to point out something she can straight away).

Really confused myself TBH because after telling me the above she then went on to give me a home programme of helping Dd to recognise a 3 word command sentence (think that was what she said) so she must be struggling to take in everything that is being said Confused. Might mention the assessment next time actually because the therapist has been changed since and is due to change again.

Thanks for the replies. So if she notices anything that dd might need help with will it be an official document that I can ask school to follow? School dont know how to talk to my dd, she hates school. I have had many meetings but they just dont get it. She needs to be told if anything out of the norm is going to happen. She needs to be reminded whats going to happen next and if she gets the courage to ask a question she needs to be told the answer in the same way every time she asks it. They just dont seem to get this. She cant cope with sudden changes or a last minuite change of teacher. She doesnt go to school on non uniform days. I remember dragging her to school now she doesnt go. We realy r not supported in school. Has anyone got any ideas on how to speek with school? Maybe my aproach is wrong but they dont want to do anything without a diagnosis

I asked for copies of anything which went into Dd's file (I am entitled to this so I asked for it) so if needed I could of used any info she had picked up on if necessary. SALT will probably pick up on smaller things which most won't and flag it to you if she has concerns. Could you not tell the therapist about how your daughter is with school? ask her to get in touch with the school on your behalf?. We were given a new programe to work on at home and they gave the school a copy too but luckily the school had already been in touch with the therapist because they were struggling to understand her. Dd's teacher is also the school SENCO and a good one at that so she knows what to do, have you spoken to your Dd's school SENCO about your concerns or were the meetings with the class teacher/headteacher?

Hi, we are awaiting an appointment for salt which will be in the new year now. Just had fedback from pycholgist saying that she can see my dd is an anxious child and has some traits of asd, but school and home reports dont come to the same comclusion so they r recomending a salt to asses her. The problem is school. We deal with things at home, we prepare her for out of the ordinary events etc etc. I have had many meetings with the class teacher last year in reception. She had to write a report for pycholgist which basicly said my dd was fine at school. But when we recieved a end of yr school report there were things in it that I picked out highlighted and passed to proff who then refered her back for another assesment. These things in the report were obvious, but not to school. She doesnt ever kick up a fuss, is quite able to do work so shw is just left to get on with it. I have seen the school nurse who basicly said they wont be putting anyting into place until a dx comess their way. I ve left messages with senc but have not had a reply. I just dont know what to do with school. Dx is taking such a long time. I started this when she was 2 shes now nearly 6 ans still going round in circles. She opened up to me this am b 4 school and said she doesnt know what shes suppost to be doing in the lesson but I just can not understand why the class teacher doesnt see this.
