Does anyone else have a child with autism who seems to have a terrible immune system?

Hello everyone as I have often mentioned I have a dd who is 3.2 who has autism and cognitive impairment . She started nursery two days a week in October and since then she has had a vomiting bug, a chest infection and now she has an awful cough that sounds like it may be another infection .is this normal I have wondered if it could be somehow linked to her autism which I'm convinced is part of a genetic syndrome , I am currently awaiting the results of microarray test any thoughts would be most welcome.

Hi Autumn, I work in a preschool and honestly it is really common for children to get everything going. In fact every new setting has new germs. My Dd2 has just started colllege and has had one thing after another

No help really, sorrySad

Hi, my LO with AS and Crohn's Disease is 7 yrs old and still catches everything. I know the Crohn's affect her immunity drastically and I tend to blame that for the amount of school she misses! I hope he picks up with you soon.

Hi autumn your post has made me think. DD4 has Emanuel Syndrome we adopted her at 3 yrs she is now 7 and shows traits of autism can't play twiddles etc but is very personable.
She has always had numerous infections chest, ears, throat but also continuos horrendous diarrhoea and I always felt she had an immune problem. Due to other problems she had a colostomy 2 months ago and I was asked about her immmunity. To cut a long story short bloods showed she had hypogammaglobulinaemia. She has now had 3 IV infusions and have been referred to GOSH
Just get your paed to check her immunological status

DD#1 has ASD with a known genetic problem underlying it. She thankfully seems on track with her immunity but some of the people that post in one of the online support groups for this particular genetic issue do report similar issues with immunity with recurrent illness issues.

my DD caught everything under the sun at that age too and now she is rarely ill...it may be a passing phase, I hope so :)
