Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Statement experts - would someone look at my application letter please?

I'm drafting a letter to apply for SA. Can't really use a model letter as ds is electively home educated and the usual models are school-related. Would someone mind having a scan through and recommend any tweaks?

Ta muchly

Sorry not an expert, but bumping for you.

Hi - not really an expert, but have just gone through the process. Happy to take a look for you, do you want to PM me the letter?

Thanks for the bump babiki and for the offer to read through it proudmum.

I've had some advice and because our situation is outside of the norm I think I need to do some more research before deciding how to approach it. Ds is 14 so not much 'school' left - I'm looking at Learning Difficulties Assessment for 16+ (done by Connexions, I believe) which might be more what I need. It's to enhance his chances of the right support at college and possibly to help him get a place at specialist college if necessary. Lots of questions to ask at this stage .

Thanks for offers though Smile.

They won't do an LDA at age 14, and if the proposed legislation goes through then LDAs will disappear and Education, Health and Care Plans (the proposed replacements for statements) will continue to age 25 if necessary and will cover people in FE colleges. So all in all you're probably best off carrying on with the application for statutory assessment with a view to getting a statement if possible.

Thanks Veritate that's useful. I did wonder about how it would fit into the new SEN plans, especially with it all being due for review in March 13. I'm meeting with Connexions today so will find out more then and decide how to proceed.

Thanks

Well that was interesting. Had my meeting with Connexions today and she's started the form-filling for LDA, as though he were in school with a statement Smile. Also liaising with her SEN specialist colleagues for advice along the way and gave me some good suggestions for what to do next.

Sometimes it comes in handy being outside the usual boxes. I can only say she was very keen to help. Think I'll still apply for SA though, belt and braces and all that Grin.

Thanks for your help.
