DD (6) had 3 true knots in umbilical cord when born - anyone experienced this

DD has learning difficulties, and has been assessed for ASD over the past 18 months, I just wondered what other peoples experiences were of umbilical cord knots and if there was any evidence they were linked to autism/learning difficulties.?

Sorry, never heard of it being related. Although to be fair, never really thought about it.

No issues with knots in umbilical cord with DS2 at all.

I suppose it would depend on what difficulties those knots imposed during pregnancy or delivery, if any.

Ds had two true knots in his cord. I was told I had miscarried him when I was 3 months pg (had lost a baby before) but I hadn't. He was also wedged breach and they wanted to turn him but I refused and I am glad due to finding the knots in the end. Had to have emergency cesarean at 6 was prem even though they insisted he was upon his due date! didn't open his eyes for 6 weeks till my official due date.

can't say for definite that the knots caused his difficulties but Maudsley decided it was a contributing factor plus the emergency c and that his waters broke and I was left 5 hours in labour and pushing before they got me in theatre. His bloods came back with no abnormalities.

My brother was 12 was prem and has OCD and dystonia he also had a knot.

thanks for your post christmas treegles, i had straightforward pregnancy, but when dd was born she did need oxygen and there were lots of doctors around,it was all a bit scarey but dd's apgar was 9 at 10 minutes.

i have read that true knots are quite rare, and that they may be linked to dev delays....

No true knots here but placental failure for both girls. Knew about dd1 and was watched closely but nearly lost her during birth after being left for five hours in distress.
They refused to listen to me with dd2 and insisted she was fine, they lost her heartbeat in labour and placenta had massive hole and was "gritty".
:(
Sadly most of us with children with Asd will tell you we didn't have good birth

ChristmasTreegles · 23/11/2012 11:20

It's so hard to tell what contributes and what doesn't, tbh. DS2's (SNs) birth was induced, but with pessary, so relatively quick - about 6 hours of labour and 10 minutes from the time he crowned until delivered. Ironically, DS3's (NT) was much more complicated.

I can only think there are loads of "contributing factors" out there. It's so hard to pin anything down though.

DD has no diagnosis (and am very hummyhaaey about ASD suggestions), but has a speech delay and other unusual characteristics. She was malpresented, I was left to push for six hours before transferred to theatre for an EMCS, her heart rate was dropping regularly and seriously until she was delivered by forceps (registrar decided that a c section would be riskier with where she was stuck) and she had an apgar at birth of four. She was nine by ten minutes though. DH was told (while I was being stitched up) that she had been deprived of oxygen during the labour and we would have to wait and see how she hit her milestones. She did have a lot of tests in SCBU though and they basically said she was fine.

My ds has ASD and severe learing difficulties, no issues with cord or delivery for us.

SoupDragon · 23/11/2012 13:58

DD (nearly 7) apparently had a knot in hers but is apparently NT.

FrustratedSycamoreBonks · 23/11/2012 14:31

Dc1 no knot, NT.
Dc2 one knot, dx of ASD.

DN one knot, NT.

I'm not sure they're linked.

Strongecoffeeismydrug · 23/11/2012 15:26

I had a lovely calm planned c section with ds(due to his chunky monkey size) and he has a DX of autism and severe learning disability.
Dd natural birth, ventouse, forceps and needed lots of oxygen at birth is NT.
