ds2 bendy joints

when ds2 (13) saw a neurologist about epilepsy , he pointed out that he has hypermobile joints but didnt tell us more than that. it would explain why ds2 has had a couple of trips to A & E with a pulled elbow maybe. we always thought his 'double jointed' thumbs were just a funny quirk.

at school , he gets told off for not completing work or writing enough . i am now wondering if its because his thumb joint is so bendy! i have asked him and he said that his hand aches quite soon after starting to write.

i now realise ds1 (17) also has the same , he always had terrible leg pains for years when younger which our g.p put down to flat feet or growing pains and he can sit in some funny positions !

is this something and nothing or should i have been having this looked at properly ? ds2 has just had a diagnosis of AS . maybe there is more than that wrong ?

On MN there seems to be an surprisingly large number of families with both ASD and hypermobility DXes, not always the same DC. Couldn't find an official link between them last time I googled, but...

My son has AS and hypermobility. I've also got hypermobility (and I suspect AS too!). Get the GP to refer you to a specialist and ask them for wrist supports for DS for writing and for typing essays on the computer. A big chunky mouse will be a lot easier on his hands too rather than the small ones which are normally sold.

I hadn't realised the pain in my hands were related to not being supported when I was typing at a computer but when I got proper supports from the hospital it reduced the pain dramatically.

And big chunky pens or pencils with pencil grips will help your DS with writing too.

Well before I found out I had hypermobility I was having a lot of trouble with my hands so the GP sent me to an occupational therapist who was a hand specialist. It was there that they then checked my knees, legs, arms, fingers etc and said I had hypermobility and that was causing all the trouble, and gave me hand supports too. I don't know who you would have to ask for if you already suspect what is wrong iyswim but the GP should know who to refer you on to.

And it was a paediatrician who dx my son with hypermobility.
