Alternatives to Parent Partnership

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any alternatives to PP? I remember some years back, Ipsea, SOSSEN all had support workers that could attend to reviews, meetings etc...now it only seems to be PP whom are best friends with the LEA/School and show it (in my LA at least) I dont mind if they charge a reasonable fee.

DS IEP came through....basically senco just lifted the aims and objective paragraphs from the statment and said that was his IEP, LOL...no small specific termly targets, not measured, sqwat diddly, infact the programmes ordered in the statmennt (SLT and Maths) have not been devised, yet somehow she has written up the IEP...I really cant figure out what the school are playing at and cant figure out why the LA are atleast not saying "do this correct this time" Ho hum, I suppose it all backs up my ongoing fight...

By the way what is ABA? I keep seeing it mentioned here and not sure what it is

I'd like to know too. They are supposed to be impartial but mine was not.

Anybody?

Have nothing to add except you are not alone. My local Parent Partnership were totally biased to accept the school's POV as default.

Good luck. Keep fighting.

I also agree. You're better off getting in touch with the ones you've mentioned and they may have other details on their website.

As far as I'm concerned pp are purely there to make it look like education authorities are helping, when really all I've witnessed is them agreeing with the school!

DameMargotFountain · 22/11/2012 09:58

i came onto this thread hoping to read a reply of 'yes, used XYZ, they are totally on your side' but sadly this is not the case.

at DDs previous school, the SENCO wanted to invite our PP worker because she knew her well and hadn't seen her for ages Shock

i think being funded by the LA and watching so many other LA agencies lose funding they have turned into the gatekeepers instead of keyholders when it comes to accessing support and information

Have you tried IPSEA or SOSSEN?

Sorry, I don't know of alternatives either. But tbh if you can do the research yourself into the legalities (sounds like you're pretty clued up already), read the SENCOP, look at SMART targets, and get advice from this board (there are many posters who can give really good advice on this kind of issue), you're probably fine on your own - you can point all this out to them just as well.

But I don't know if the LA would get involved at this micro level with IEPs though, in any case.

Learning70 · 22/11/2012 12:55

I'm so glad I read this. I have had an issue with school this week and I have had a long chat with IPSEA about it today. I just felt that school have been a little bit too enthusiastic about promoting PP, like they would be expecting my call iykwim and merely there to get me to agree with school.

hoxtonbabe · 22/11/2012 13:47

I have tried the obvious, but with most charitable organsations they dont have the manpower to provide this anymore :-(

PP will not bite the hand that feeds them! however when I visit the School become so filled with rage due to her lies and arrogance , I cant control it no matter how much meds my GP has tried to put me on when it comes to that school, lol so I always need someone to tag along who knows their stuff to fill in where I can't

Ive not quite punched her yet, but i think this time I will as I cant believe just how bad the school is and got complaints, and claims stacking up against them and when you get to this stage it is very hard to remain civil (appeal panel clearly did not see the relationship breakdown as an issue!)

LA should (if they had sense) get involved given what we have just been through, and what we are about to go through, it would be in their interest, but hey, I am not complaining as it just adds to my evidence list for my DD claim and UTT appeal.

Dame: sodding cheek! A meeting discussing your child should not be an excuse to catch up on old times..uselss the lot of them

Learning70 I'm sure the school were full of joy, as they are probably aware that the PP will not be of any help...god help us when this forced mediation crap comes into play.

ack, that set up is far behind me - i changed DDs school and haven't called PP since. funnily enough they haven't called me either, THAT'S how supportive they are Hmm

SophiesMummySaid · 22/11/2012 14:02

Hi, does your DS have ASD? If so, maybe try National Autistic Society? If not ASD, similar organisation for his condition?

hoxtonbabe · 22/11/2012 14:14

Sophiesmummy: Mine is AFASIC, they dont offer such support (well at least not to me) and other than PP (which they know are useless) they cant think of anywhere or anyone else..

AFAIK our local autistic trust still do it but thats no good to you if your dc isn't on the spectrum and you're not in this part of the country (Kent)
