My dd is 14 months and had her mmr jab at the beginning of december, three days later she turned into a little monster, she cries all the time during the day and when she goes to bed she screams for anything up to three hours before going off to sleep.
Before the jab she went to bed after her bottle in a dark room, awake and just went off to sleep and stayed that way all night. She mostly amused herself just pottering about the floor after me,her brothers or the cats. She was begining to point at things and really tries to communicate, her social skills are coming on amazingly. These things are still the same it's just the sleep thing and the screaming all the time, she no longer is content to just muddle round on the floor, she is constantly hanging from any part of my body she can get a hold of and just screaming. She has started night waking again too.
She is defo not teething or unwell.I have an autistic son who is almost 8 though his autism was not caused by the mmr jab so anyone who has an autistic child then another will understand where i am coming from.
Someone please tell me her amazing and continuing social skills prove nothing has gone wrong and that she is being a spoilt little toad and playing me up....Please

How's her digestive system?

A few people I would contact in your position:

  1. The autsim research unit- email Paul Shattock-= he's very helpful.

  2. Nutri-link may be able to help. They are very up on all the biomedical causes of autism. I haven't tried them myself but they look good and I have emailed to get an appointment with them asap. They seem to know their stuff.

  3. A decent homeopath (although nutri-link may be able to help there as well).

All of these can be found on google. I haven't got time to search out the links now but will provide them tomorrow if you're stuck- I didn't want to wait until tomorrow to reply.

Remember she only had her jab 3 weeks ago so she's probably just be having a short term reaction.

In the meatime you could give her probiotics and maybe a zinc and vitamin C supplement. Also short term supplementation with vitamin A will help with any measles problems. it needs to be "proper" vitamin A, not carotenes and thereofre needs to be cod liver oil. Don't give too much though.

This is all heavy handed and I'm sure is more than necessary, but you know what autism is like- there's no point taking any chances at all.

Hope she's feeling better soon -I'm sure she will be.

BTW there's someone in In the news on the MMR thread who has posted a very similar message recently. It may be worth trying to contact her to see how she's getting on.

Thanks jim jams she has been seeing a chiropractor since she was 9 weeks old, though hasnt been for a while, will maybe phone up for an appointment,as for her digestion she is already dairy intolerant so i think id be right in saying that rules out probiotics?
Will try and get the right vits and will look up nutri link.Thanks.

oh no probiotics should be good if she has dodgy digestion. You can get them from health food shops to add to food. Often kept in the fridge.

Nutri-link really seem to know their stuff. There may not be anyone near you but I think they will do a lot by email. I'm sure they'd be able to give advice.

Paul Shattock is lovely as well. You could try ringing him but may get a quicker answer by email (the ARU is permanently engaged).

Hope it all settles down soon.

Sorry - just popped in to see if you had replied. Got to dash again. I'll post those links tomorrow if you can't find them.

BTW- reassurance. The person I know best whose son was MMR damaged regressed very quickly following the MMR (within days/weeks speech etc had gone). That's why I think it would be worth contacting Paul Shattock, I'm sure I read somewhere recently that he said regression following MMR is usually rapid. I'm sure I've mentioned it on here so may have given a link when it was fresher in my mind. You could have a look at the visceral website as well (andy Wakefields organisation).

The point of that last message of course being that as your dd has all her social skills and pointing etc intact over 3 weeks after the jab then if I have remembered the quote correctly then she should be fine. That's why it would be worth talking to Paul Shattock he might be able to give some idea of the time frame- and reassure you that your dd is outside of that now iyswim.

Jimjams · 29/12/2003 08:40

OK here's nutri-link They're probably your best bet. In info for parents it talks about siblings so they're used to thinking about them. If there isn't one near you then I would contact Michael Ash. He's the founder and I've read a couple of articles of his- and he seems very good.

Next here's the Autism Research Unit where you can contact Paul Shattock.

And here is visceral

Let us know how you get on.

loobie, hope all is well with your dd, and also hope that all the excellent and practical advice and links that jimjams has given will give you the knowledge to reassure yourself.

Loobie · 30/12/2003 10:56

jim jams thank you for the links i have loooked though them and they are really informative, even picked up some tips for ds1 who has autism. As for dd i am holding on to ht efact that her social skills she has learned so far are still very much there and more are appearing all the time,I will wait till the kids go back to school next week and everything goes back to normal to see if she begins to settle back down.
Thanks again.
