learning breakthrough programme - anyone tried it?

My goals - to focus on the vestibular system (balance) to help DS's dyspraxia. It's £260 so I'd need to save for it.

I've been looking for months for a UK specialist who uses the astronaut training programme without success to go see but have been really impressed with our "home version" using the £30 book over the summer. Impressed enough to want to continue, but the book uses equipment etc I just don't have access to. This programme focuses on the audio-visio-vestibular system and gets right to the heart of the matter with regards DS's problems in this area.

I'm deffo not looking for RRT as we are already working on those with a BO and a few months away from completion.

Not heard of it bochead. Just used google and come up with various links that say it resembles sensory integration therapy? what link are you looking at? a lot of it seems american that I am going through.

In other words you have got me curious Grin

porridgelover · 01/10/2012 16:29

Another curious reader, bochead....
I know of Astronaut Training and have seen it used.

You found the book a good start then???

I googled Learning Breakthrough and the activities are a combination of BO, OT and PT....do you know any therapists who use it here?

bochead · 01/10/2012 16:33

where have you seen the astronaut training used porridge? I'm asking cos I'm honestly shocked at how effective my pathetic home attempts using the book have been. It's deffo the right way to go for DS but I can't find a private practitioner for love nor money in the UK - would kill to find a pro to oversee a proper programme for DS.

Bochead...it was at a training course with Sheila Frick who (I think) was one of the OTs who developed the Astronaut programme.
Have you tried the private practice list for OT's? i would imagine if an OT had done Therapeutic Listening training or advanced Sensory Integration, someone would also have done this?

I think I will be investing in that book. Smile

porridgelover · 02/10/2012 11:39

bochead I googled some of the OTs who came up on that list (some of whom have their own websites). Some seem to offer general SI therapy.
I dont know where you are so if you have a search through that you may be able to come up with someone who does Astronaut stuff....long shot but may be worth it?

Hi everyone,

I am the Mother of an amazing 12 year old Daughter who has recently been diagnosed with asd. I came across this forum when I was googling learning breakthrough. We have an appt next Thursday evening in Newtownabbey, if you would like I will let you know how it goes, it is a free evaluation/consultation.

My Daughter is having huge issues around anxiety when she goes into school after coming across the learning breakthrough on the Northern Ireland Asd site I phoned Susan who was great at explaining that she thinks my daughter is expsriencing sensory overload in school, Susan explained that the whole family can be treated, anyways we are booked and going next week. :)

Hi. Sorry to bother you. I see you have possibly used the services of learning breakthrough with Susan. Before committing to anything I was just looking to gauge what you you thought of it.
My son is 6yrs old and experiences learning issues mainly processing difficulties though is OK socially.
Thanks for your time.

Sorry for reawakening an ancient thread, we're booked for this week and I was wondering how you got on 8 years ago 😂 did you do the course and find it helpful?

DS has dyspraxia and ASD, the best things we found for it were swimming lessons and learning the piano. Helped so much with his coordination. He wouldn't stand on one of those silly balance boards for love nor money, complete waste of money that was!

PerformanceBreakthrough · 19/06/2025 16:16

Hi Sandy420, Thanks so much for sharing your experience and I’m really glad to hear that swimming and piano made such a difference for your son. That’s the wonderful thing about neuroplasticity, the brain can change and rewire, especially when we find the right tools and activities that work for each individual like I did for my own two boys. I completely understand that not every piece of equipment works for every child, especially if it’s not used with the right support. Our programme isn’t just about the balance board, it’s about how we combine movement, rhythm, timing, and sensory input to target the root causes of coordination challenges like dyspraxia and sensory dysregulation. Thanks again for contributing to the conversation. It’s always helpful to hear what’s worked for different families!
