Year 1, difficulty learning to read and phonics

Hi

I wondered if anyone could tell me at what age the different phases of jolly phonics are delivered?

I've been concerned about my ds difficulties with learning to read. He was on EA+ in foundation due to input from SALT (he has a phonological disorder) but I couldn't get an IEP from them and they didn't share my concerns over his reading.

He's now in year 1 and will be 6 in Feb. Hes now on SA+ and after complaining I have received 1 IEP dated Jan 2012 and a new one (despite me asking to be involved in writing it). It says on the old one that his target for phonics was only partially met and needed to continue. It says that he is starting to recognise the sounds in phase 2. His new target is to complete phase 2.

He is not reading yet and he finds it all very difficult. He is highly intelligent and it's frustrating him along with his significant difficulty to write due to extreme hypermobility in his hands. Along with his speech difficulties, social anxiety and he experiences selective mutism type behaviour, I'm concerned that his anxiety is being compounded by it all.

An I right to be concerned that he is still in phase 2 and has been since at least Jan? The salt said he may need a different method than phonics as it doesn't suit all children. The senco is highly dismissive and tried to imply that it's me that's anxious. He also can't confidently count to 10.

He is the youngest of 3 and my dd 13 has ASD, auditory dyslexia, auditory processing difficulties, dyspraxic traits, ADHD, sensory processing difficulties and demand avoidance. I have just got her statementrd without a fight and into special school, I have learned a lot thanks to forums like this. I know the IEP's are rubbish and that after 2 years since being referred to salt there should be more than 2 IEP's.

Ive posted in education as well.I hope it makes sense as on my phone! Thanks in advance.

I would agree with you Salt, phonics is only one method of learning how to read and imho the professionals should be looking to see if another method would suit.

If he is having fine motor issues due to hypermobility, maybe jolly phonics is actually harder for him? I think it is unfair that you are not being involved in the IEP. I would request a meeting to see if everything is being done that can be done to help him? Especially as IEP targets are demonstrably not being met ? this is a red flag IMHO and good evidence that the help needs to be stepped up. Sounds like the SENCo needs to up his or her game and quit it with the 'it's your anxiety' line because it's inappropriate, feeds into your paranoia and is against the SEN Code of conduct (as I'm sure you know).

Thanks chaps

You're right handy woman, she is trying to feed in to my paranoia. She knows about all the difficulties my dd has and that their school continuously told me she had no difficulties when I asked! Ok she was aacademically fine but was continuously kept in for being lazy and refusing to write, saying she didn't understand what she was meant to do etc etc which we now know is down to her disability. They didn't even notice her poor pencil grip. I'd hoped things would be better with a new head and SENCO (she didn't know my daughter) but its not looking likely. I'm not falling for it a 2nd time!

They still haven't admitted that he's struggling with reading but I'm now aware, thanks to mrz on primary board, that he's on letters and sounds phase 2 which is meant to be completed in 6 weeks and he's been on it since at least Jan and his current IEP target is to complete it! He should be on phase 5 in year 1.

She's wrote the IEP after I asked to be involved in writing the new one because she's listed physio in the list of outside agencies which she would only have known from my letter requesting input! They've come up with 1 IEP for the whole of foundation stage and he was referred to SALT autumn term of F1!

I've got a meeting with her and his class teacher next week so I'm going to make it clear how unhappy I am with the lack of communication and insist on the CAF I requested last week.

She's said that his IEP targets have been partially met so I'm going to ask for more clarification on that and I think I'm gonna write an iep of my own! I've just done all this, with a supportive school, for my dd so I do know what's what so why do I keep doubting myself!

I rewrote my DD's statement and they kept every word of it in and parent partnership asked if I'd be interested in volunteering for them in the future because of the work I did. I need to stop letting her undermine me!
