Working fulltime and carers allowance

phew this is a minefield, as I have only worked p/t before (£98pw) I've still been entitled to CA for my 20 year old son, who gets middle rate care and lower rate mobility.

Now I'm considering switching to full-time, my wages will take me over the £100 pw threshold - my questions are...

can the caring responsibility be passed over to someone else in the household who doesn't earn over £100 (in our case my older son) or is the £100 threshold a household one?

Also will I still be entitled to the carers premium with housing benefit?

Can't quite work it out from my local authority's online calculator - it says "Are you, your partner, or both of you, being paid (or entitled to be paid) a Carer's Allowance for looking after someone ?"

Does that mean, I'm waiting to hear about a claim or does it mean, I would be entitled (ie my son's DLA matches the CA criteria) to it if not earning over the threshold?

Thanks in advance if anyone has any experience of this, I'd be really greatful for any input :)

Obviously I realise I can't do both (pass carers allownace onto son and still claim underlying entitlement)

Hi,

Carer's allowance is paid to the person caring for the child. So, if someone else could take over your caring responsibilities to allow you to work more, hey may be able to claim.

The criteria to be met are:

To get Carer?s Allowance you must meet all the following conditions:

You look after someone who gets a qualifying disability benefit.
You look after that person for at least 35 hours a week.
You are aged 16 or over.
You are not in full-time education.
You earn £100 a week or less (after deductions).
You satisfy UK presence and residence conditions

Thanks, so the £100 a week threshold is personal not household earnings?

And yes caring responsibilities would have to be passed onto eldest son, who is currently unemployed

You can earn £100 AFTER deductions
This means after tax and national insurance and after childcare so a gross income of about £125 plus cost of any childcare.

Hi agnes, if I get the job I'm after (fingers tightly crossed) I'd be earning £228 pw so I'd definitely lose my CA. Still unsure if the threshold is personal or household?

I thought it was personal. I thought it only applied to the person claiming the CA.

It's personal. I used to claim it despite STBEX H earning a good salary.

I get carers even though DH works. Also, i work and earn more than £100 pw but due to high childcare costs and pension contributions i still qualify. The dwp deducts iirc 50% of childcare costs and pension contributions from the net wage. So you might still qualify even though you earn above the theshold iyswim.

Yes, it is personal. It is paid to the carer. But the carer doesn't have to be you.
