Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

DD (6) has been assessed for ASD over the past 2 years and the SLT says she does think she is ASD as she does not tick all boxes...

But my dd does have learning difficulties, and so i do not know where to go now.

DD has had one SLT appt last week but the SLn said she did not need any further appts, and that she would send me exercises to with her.

DD has another paed appt in the next few months - but i get the impression that is to 'tie things up'

So I do not know what help she will get now... she is way way behind academically, she is still in pull ups at night, and has no real friends at school. The other girls sometimes ignore her or look at her like she is an alien.

DD is a lovely caring, gorgeous girl but she needs additional help - school provide an IEP and TA support but I do not feel she is makiing progress - in fact at her last Iep Meeting that was clear!

So, I am not sure where to turn now...? Am feeling desperate and tearful...

Any advice much appreciated.
TIA

Thank you for your post pipinjo, SALT has said in writing that whilst they can understand why DD was referred to the paed for ASD (as recomended by her Reception teacher) she does not think that DD has ASD. The Paed has said in a phone conversation to me that onthe SALT's observations in school she does not think that DD has ASD.

We are not benefits, so couldn;t get the legal aid thing, but i will look at the DLA as I think that DD needs more help than school are giving her and we cannot afford to pay for extra help / tuition for her...

I am fed up of waiting for school to give the extra help she needs - i just wondered what help there is out there for children who aren't dx as being on the autism spectrum...?

I am having a low day with it all, feeling like she will never have any proper friends....

As it is based on needs not diagnosis you can apply for a statement anyway. I got one long before DS was diagnosed. Do a one page bullet point summary of your child's barriers to learning as part of your application, in case they don't read the reports properly.

e.g
Needs formal explicit teaching in social skills so that she can make friends
Needs behaviroal management

Have you asked GP & Pead for a muliti-disciplinary assessment somehwere like GOSH to clarify her diagnosis? Ask the pead if anyone has done ADOS etc & to remember that ASD presents differently in girls.

I read this thread the morning but had to go to work.

Just wanted to say that my Dd3 apparently did not meet all the criteria for a dx of ASD due to her not having obbsessions, she actually does but they are not all consuming and she can do other things alongside them.

She was eventually diagnoses using a DISCO assessment which was designed by Lorna Wing to help to identify those people who are difficult to diagnose.

The psychiatrist gave her the diagnosis of ASD but she is more the aspergers end of the spectrum.

I agree with Bochead, girls can be very difficult to dx and are often able to hide their difficulties at school or other places. This can lead to them being very stressed and in Dd3's case led to her becoming very sad and almost depressed.
