Ear defender recommendations?

DS has ASD and one of his sensory issues is hyperacusis (over sensitive hearing, causing pain and distress). He has improved over the years, but I am thinking of getting some ear defenders for certain situations (public toilets, school 'disco' parties, etc).

Has anyone used them?
Do they all look like big headphones or are there ear plug type ones? Me and DS would be happy with the headphone types but his school always seem to be on the alert for anything that might make him "stand out". Hmm If the headphone looking ones are best though that's what we'll be getting!

This thread is a bit old now, but if you have landed here looking for recommendations, we've recently updated our guide to the best ear defenders featuring products tried and tested by Mumsnet parents.

We hope you find this useful.

we have these which are very effective but obvs stand out a lot

DD can't tolerate things in her ears but these certainly do the trick

We too have the ones falseStarted has, and found then to be very useful. You can get them in different colours, including black and brown, if my memory serves me well.
They come with a little pouch to keep them in.

They do look nice, I will show DS in the morning and see what he thinks. Smile

I don't think DS would wear earplugs that had to go in his ears either.

Can I ask about your DS's head size? Grin My DS has a rather large head. Some people on the reviews are saying they were tight on their baby's head, but then on others a mum has said they fit her head too? Hmm

I was looking at these for my ds as he is a teen, but don't know if they are too hard-core!

FalseStartered · 08/09/2012 20:56

the ones i linked too are quite tight, but they are very padded and i think any looser and they'd slip down

the tightness doesn't bother DD

boredandrestless · 08/09/2012 21:12

He likes to be squeezed/have pressure on him so I think they would be fine.

I probably wouldn't be able to get my DS to wear those cornzy but your DS might? I am hoping the blueness of the first pair will appeal as he loves anything that's Thomas blue.

We have the Edz Kids ones too & they're great - also they fold down really small when you're not using them as they sort of tuck inside the headband.

Galena · 09/09/2012 08:23

We took Peltor ones to the Paralympics and DD loved them. They look similar to the Edz ones, but don't come in blue... I tried them on and they were tight, but bloody marvellous - cut out all the noise!

signandsmile · 09/09/2012 10:06

Ds has the Edz kids ones and loves them, he asks to put them on in noisy situations and he have given school a pair to keep there, (He is only 5 and doesn't have any awareness of being 'different', but school are really fab about difference just being difference, and thus ok, IYSWIM).

CwtchesAndCuddles · 09/09/2012 13:10

Ds has a large head - my sunglasses fit him - what size should I get?

wibbleweed · 09/09/2012 14:54

DS2 (aged 5.5 - AS) has fluorescent yellow Peltor ear defenders and uses them loads. He has a little rucksack which is with him at all times anyway (has an epipen for an allergy) which he keeps them in.

Ok - they look rather 'obvious' but he doesn't care at the moment. They've been great at things like airshows, but he also sometimes asks for them at events that are quieter but still busy, e.g. at a fun run, or when we braved the theatre (not sure we'll do that again, but that's another story!)

I got them from Amazon...

Thanks for this thread, we've been looking for similar for our almost 6 year old ASD/ADHD son. He's obsessed with the colour red so that's an important factor too!
