My youngest son (9), has just been given a diagnosis of Development coordination difficulties. He has problems with his speech (he talks so quietly that people find it hard to understand him) and also his handwriting. He is also so tall for his age (4ft 11). I have M.E. (diagnosed 7 years ago). I was wondering if it was worth seeking a statement of special educational needs?

What would you hope to gain from a statement. A statement in itself does nothing.

It depends on what sort of help you think he needs and whether the school is currently able (and willing) to supply that help.

If school won't provide additional help or say things such as they have insufficient funding to provide the additional help he requires, then you should seek an assessment that may lead to a Statement.

It all depends on what you want and whether school can supply it without a Statement.

First off you should talk to the SENCO about his problems and what school are doing to help him.
