I expect to hear from the LEA regarding the SA in the next couple of weeks (NIL or draft).
Assessment at the APD clinic at GOSH showed that DS has problems with auditory processing in situations where there is background noise but all other tests were normal. The doctor questioned whether the right kind of quiet environment could be provided in the mainstream. He also said that in the classroom (rather than an assessment environment) problems with listening/understanding would compound difficulties with concentration and distractability (more difficult to concentrate if you are unable to hear) and that there is further negative interaction involving his SpLD and poor working memory. If this problem existed in isolation interventions such as sitting at the front of the class, repeating instructions f2f 1:1, visual reminders and cues etc may be effective. I told him these interventions have been employed since 2009 and have proved to be ineffective.
DS has also been seen by a different Community Paediatrician as part of the SA. On the basis of her observations and discussion with me she suspects ASD and will say so on her report and refer DS for further assessment.
DS has also been assessed by Margo Sharp (private SALT specialising in ASD and complex communication disorders, authorised user of DISCO and ADOS) at home. She has diagnosed him as being on the Spectrum (Aspergers). She commented that his auditory processing is very poor (worst case in 20 years of diagnosis) as are his skills of reciprocity ? it took him 3 hours to complete assessments normally completed in 2 hours. DS has told her that he wants to go to Frewen (specialist school). Margo believes that DS requires specialist teaching and will need SALT intervention around ?pre-learning?. He has a three day induction booked for next week
DS also has an assessment with Daphne Keen on Friday.
Meanwhile DS was due to start school this morning but couldn't do it.
I am so angry that I am in this situation - LEA delayed assessment arguing there was sufficient time to have a statement in place by September. I had to try to get him in for the afternoon but this was not possible. I am now waiting for the SENCO to call to discuss what next. DH fears we will be prosecuted but legal advice line provided comfort - school does not have right to put pressure on him directly to 'persuade' him to attend. He can say 'no' (loudly) to his parents but is hyper-compliant at school and will do and say anything.
Anybody else in a scarey place?? Is it wine o'clock yet? (Maybe not before the SENCO calls!)
