Hello. My DS is being assessed for possible Aspergers/ADHD, this has been going on for the last year, I know that isnt a long time compared to some people. My doctor referred him to our local paedetrician and he has also seen OT and Speech and Language. Although they haven been really good, OT especially as she completely gets him and has spent time with him, it is still ongoing, no diagnosis. At school he is apparently "fine"?!?. I have read on here that it is common for children to hold it together at school only to release at home. Which is what he does. Anyway, I could go on and on...my main question is would anyone recomend getting a private diagnosis? I have seen Daphne Keen mentioned. Would this help him at school, and is it held in the same importance as a diagnosis if through NHS? Sorry I am new to this process and I am trying my best, but I feel a diagnosis would be a positive thing all round in getting him the help and understanding he needs. Thank you, any experience, knowledge of private consultation much appreciated.

We waited just over a year for my ds's ASD dx, although it would have been much longer if I hadn't kick up so much of a fuss. He had been referred to salt about 2 and a half years ago though. There were periods where health professionals were in the 'no dx needed' camp and other times when they were more 'yes he needs a dx', and camhs even said 'no dx' a week before he got his dx.

He was awful at school and had been excluded 4 times (my son is only 5 btw), but as these were illegal exclusions and the school were failing to adequately support DS they then tried to cover their own backs and the head claimed he was fine etc to the paediatrician, luckily the paed still referred me to camhs and I insisted they spoke to his class teacher who gave a better account, although he still had days where he was 'fine'.

My point basically is keep trying and pushing for nhs dx, the more you shout the quicker you're seen is what I found, and even though school claim he is fine you might still have a dx.

You're entitled to a 2nd opinion so maybe keep the private dx in the back burner for just now?

Good luck xx
